Plug it in, fire it up, Mr. President

Credit Ford Motor Co. CEO Alan Mulally with saving the leader of the free world from self-immolation

Mulally told journalists at the New York auto show that he intervened to prevent President Bush from plugging an electrical cord into the hydrogen tank of Ford's hydrogen-electric plug-in hybrid at the White House last week. Ford wanted to give the Commander-in-Chief an actual demonstration of the innovative vehicle, so the automaker arranged for an electrical outlet to be installed on the South Lawn and ran a charging cord to the hybrid. However, as Mulally followed Bush out to the car, he noticed someone had left the cord lying at the rear of the vehicle, near the fuel tank.

"I just thought, 'Oh my goodness!' So, I started walking faster, and the President walked faster and he got to the cord before I did. I violated all the protocols. I touched the President. I grabbed his arm and I moved him up to the front," Mulally said. "I wanted the president to make sure he plugged into the electricity, not into the hydrogen This is all off the record, right?"

I heard about this yesterday on the radio and I started cracking up. The president didn't know where to plug it in.

I SERIOUSLY doubt you would rather have Dick Cheney in power over Jr...

I would. Then Cheney and his activities would be more in the open. It is better to see what he does as clearly as possible than to have him doing, god knows what, hidden in the safety of the shadows.

I want to thank President Bush for being an allie (sp?) with the green movement...This has got to happen and I invite my friends on the darkside (leftside) to fully embrace the ideology...

What I really want to see is a plan on sticking to a rollover for all vehicles to be hybrid, and for the alternatives to be presented and for an ultimate decision made on which type is best...We should have done this long ago...I blame both sides on this. (politically)

Are we waiting for technology to catch up to some level or what? There already is 9 different ways to go...Let's do the best way and declare mandatory for manufactures to make all vehicles flex ready. Mandate gas pump to do the same...

It pisses me off when the oil companies build 4 new and different gas stations at a 4-way, yet they don't contribute the capital towards what benefits all of us irregardless of politics...

    I'm ROXRAN, and that's what I think...

only ford could design a car in which one could be confused as to which plug to use for the hydrogen or electric. i don't think this would be a problem with a toyota.........................

The car does sound like it is dangerous and not quite ready for the suburban garage.

Maybe it was a plot by Cheney to assume FORMAL command. With Bush gone, Cheney would heen blamed on the Iranians. Halliburton would make another killing off of war.

Its a funny story but some of it doesn't add up. Yes it seems like pretty stupid design to put the electric plug next to the hydrogen plug but what seems stranger to me is that the plug and the hydrogen nozzle would look similar enough that they could be mistaken or that one could fit into the other.

Since one is transmitting electricty and one a gas it seems to me on function alone their shapes would be vary different. For that matter in all electrical outlets there are designed failsafes to prevent accidental electrocution, such as that you plug in the male prongs into an active outlet so that you don't have exposed charged prongs that could cause an accident. Even if the designers were sloppy it seems strange to me that they would've designed something without that failsafe since that would've been going beyond standard design.

Bush isn't that dumb. He was purposely trying to sabotage the car.

What a non-story. It doesn't even make the claim that Bush was trying to plug the cord into the wrong spot. Mulally saw that the cord was placed at the back of the car (the wrong end), and took it upon himself to make the decision that Bush would not be able to figure out that an electical cord doesn't go into a hydrogen fuel tank. If I come over and tell you to pour milk on your cereal, not rat poison, that doesn't mean I saved you from poisoning yourself.
