This story has been going around for a few days (and actually probably more than that): http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3158633 Best Buy, EB/GS, Amazon, and a few other places (mostly online retailers AFAIK) no longer have 20GB PS3s in stock it seems. I suppose the 80GB PS3 rumors might be related to this news. Can't say that this makes the PS3 more attractive, at least in my eyes since I prefer the 20GB SKU over the 60GB SKU. Or I should say I prefer the PS3 that doesn't have WiFi, memory card slots, etc., and is $100 cheaper. I really don't like multiple SKUs.
just curious. im gonna buy a system soon. what is the wi-fi for on the ps3? the 360 has halo 3, and lost planet : extreme condition.
It has wireless internet connectivity built in so you can access the web, PS Network, talk to friends, chat, etc... The 20GB requires/required a wired connection (which the 60GB supports).
Step 2 is to reduce the price of the 60MB model by $100 to match the current price of the 20MB version. Step 3 is to reduce the price another $100 and I might buy one this Christmas or in 2008.
I know 7 people who are satisfied with their 360 as a next gen system. The only con to the 360 is MS planning to add more SKUs, so it's harder to figure out which version will be the best deal...
I was told by a manager of gamestop. that they are not carrying them anymore because the 20gb had tons of problems. They were losing money fixing them etc.
That would be more likely if the 60GB PS3 basically became the 20GB (no WiFi, no memory card slots, etc.), while another PS3 with a bigger HDD (say 80GB) became the 60GB PS3. The prices for HDDs might make that a move Sony may want to pursue. I guess if they were planning on doing that, they would have to clear out the 20GB PS3s (can't have 20GB PS3s for $500, 60GB PS3s for $500, 60GB PS3s for $600, and 80GB PS3s for $600...or whatever). That sounds like a nightmare if they do that. I'd love to know about that. I would think the two PS3s were roughly the same internally, outside of a few extras in the 60GB PS3. If the 20GB PS3 has a ton of problems, so would the other one I would think. BTW, I'm not questioning you but the manager if it wasn't clear. Not that I really put much stock into what they say anyway. I think I've read 4-5 different stories as to why stores are no longer carrying them. Kind of funny how they all stopped carrying them around the same time too.
Then they should discontinue the 60GB PS3 too. It is official now I guess: http://biz.gamedaily.com/industry/feature/?id=15764 edit: Wonder how they could gauge demand of the 20GB PS3s when the PS3 was sold out at the end of 2006, and stores haven't seen new shipments of 20GB PS3s in 2007. I've also seen WAY more people interested in the 20GB PS3 than the Core 360, and I think the Core is about 10% of 360 sales in the US. Good try though.
Dumb in the fact that, unlike the Core, the 20GB PS3 actually made more sense. And here, essentially, is the main reason. With sales not as great as expected, Sony is less willing to take the bigger loss. I'm sure that retailers weren't necessarily ordering tons of 20 GB units...but then again they probably weren't asking for a lot of 60GB either. Probably isn't reasonable to put the blame solely on them. If they actually add a rumored 80GB model, you really have to wonder what they are thinking these days. (Not that most people don't wonder that already)
