seriously, my roomates mom is the head of a company or something. and she only has a bachelor degree!! while i dont know exactly how much she makes, i know its well above 6 fig, and they live in one of the best counties in the nation. (montgomery county, MD). but for undergrads, its probably hard to find a job that even pays you more then $50,000 with just a bachelors degree. no, today you need a masters, PhD, MD, or whatever just to scratch out a comfortable living. but hell, to even get into a good grad program is harder then before, i know they just recently raised the USMLE (med school board exams) score for passing, so not only is it a b**** to get into, its a b**** to complete.

but wait, it doesnt start in college, it starts in high school!!. while i didnt experience this, the class one grade lower then me had to take the new SATS. which i believe comprises of a writing section now. so you had to sweat your ass off for 3 hours, oh well sucks to be you since we are going to make the new SATS longer and harder.

colleges looks for candidate who lets see...almost perfect GPAs with APs (they dont even gimme credit for some of them here), a ton of extracurricular activitives, and oh, 95%+ on the SATs.

i just find that its harder to do something now then perhaps 10 years ago, and its not going to get any easier. eventually, the standards will be set so high its impossible for even a super nerd who works out a lot to reach.

The best answer is: no. It has everything to do with how you work, with a tad of luck involved. Oh, and BTW, it's bachelor.

My brother and I both went to Texas Tech. We both went in vastly different areas. But both of us make decent livings. Sad to say, he's beating me, and is damn near close to making 7 figures, even though I had the better degree.

Point being: Don't worry about your SAT, or, quite frankly, what college you go to. All they do is put your foot in the door.

It depends on how well off your parents are. If they helped pay your way to college or give you a place to stay, then it's not that bad.

Even if education requirements are rising, the opportunities are still there.

LOL. It's not that hard to find high paying jobs with "just" a Bachelors degree, it really depends on the profession/experience/who you know ;) /grades/personality/plus a bunch of other factors...

Personally I'm working towards becoming a CPA and I only have a Bachelors, I expect to be making good money after a few years of experience...currently working in a Bank, I know plenty of people with psych majors who are pulling down 6 figures due to experience and who they ended up getting to know...a lot of factors play into how much you will make...

I knew a person with a masters who couldn't use Excel, she friggin got fired as a bookkeeper, that's pathetic.

It's harder if you're poor, about the same if you aren't.

Age has nothing to do with it.

If you want to get ahead, just remember this:

It's not what you know, it's who you know.

It's not what you say, but how you say it.

    And

Always pimp what you got like it's a lot.

I'm sooo tired of that excuse. 88% of millionaires are FIRST generation Rich. My parents didn't have any money to help me at all in school. I just worked 40hr weeks and took out student loans while going to college. took an extra semester plus several summer sessions to graduate, but I did it. I paid off my student loans a year early as well. Right now I make 50K with just a bachelors degree (I intend of making more though). It's all in the work ethic and desire. Most kids today (even the "poor" ones) have so much handed to them that they don't have good work ethics...so if there's any reason why kids have a harder time in the real world today, its because of the way they were brought up.

It all boils down to what is important to you.

If money makes you happy, your career path is going to take you into a line of work where the payoff is big if you are successful.

If molding young minds makes you happy, you go into education.

Some people, like me, do what they have to do during the day to make ends meet, so we can do what we love after hours.

The key is....find what makes you happy, and do it.

    :)

Maybe she used her degree to get her foot in the door, then worked her way up. It can still happen, you know.

You just described my life. Although all of that's about to change.

There is actually a big shortage of skilled, educated workers in the United States right now and companies are paying good salaries for people with bachelors degrees with nothing post graduate.

I make a good living, well above the median without a grad degree and just an undergraduate. I've done well at the company I work for because I work hard to get what I think I deserve.

My wife has a grad degree and a CPA and she only makes about 7-8% more than I do, but all it would take would be a jump to a new company to make about 20% more right now (my wife just moved companies).

I consider it, but I'm comfy where I am.

I have some friends that make as much or more than I do without any degrees. They were just smart where they went to work after high school. One became a roustabout and is now a roughneck on offshore wells making good money. Another is an insurance salesman that makes a decent living, but will probaby surpass all of my friends in career money.

Of course if you have drive and a good personality you can make a killing in sales if you work hard, no matter what your background/education/socio economic status is.

This still happens all the time. Degrees just get you the initial job, after that its about performance, hard work, networking, achievements.

My company doesn't even look at degrees after about 10 years of work.

I think there are more people competing for the good jobs. So, it is who you know. I am glad I am getting out of college in May though. It is going up each year.

But why I chose law enforcement....

There is always going to be a demand and the job keeps you busy/something new each day.

I understand completly. Undergrad just gets you to Grad school so you have a snowballs chance in hell of paying off your student loans before your kids die. I have to go to law school just to do what I love and sometimes it seems awfully hard but you just have to stick it out.

Its all about starting your own business man. Take advice from me. I went to UH graduated 2 years ago with 2 bachelors degrees and now am flying all over Latin America enjoying every earthly pleasure down here. (these Latin women are going to kill me)

Don't get me wrong, I work my @ss off, harder than any of my friends, but I decided I didn't want to work for anyone so I did it on my own. If you choose this path be prepared for lots of failures, great successes and most of all HARD HARD WORK. However right now Im young, fairly successful, and independent from everyone. The best part is I'm seeing the world without joining the military. Anyway take my advice, find something your interested in and see how you can make money off of it. ;)

If you are young, start your own business! This may be the only chance in your life to do it!

Your chances of getting rich while working for "the man" are not great.

Professional success is almost always a direct reflection of how well-connected you are.

As the American working class diminishes, we are moving to a two-class society: rich or poor. The rich are a small percentage of the population. The poor are a large percentage. And all of those poor people want to be rich, so there's strong competition to be in the upper class. This situation will get much worse. It will not get better.

A college degree doesn't even put your foot in the door. All it does is prevent your resume from being thrown into the trash bin by someone who is hiring. That's it. All those years of expense, time and work... all to avoid a trash bin.

i think some people have the wrong idea that i only want to get rich...while its good to have a lot of money, i would still rather be a doctor then say a lawyer even if i can get paid twice as much. and i guess what i meant to say is that with the rising population, everything is much more competitive, and its only going to get more competitive for each passing younger generation.
