This is the trend I'm seeing at the two offices I've worked at. I spent all of last October in India handing off some end of life products to one of the offices over there.

However, all of the new product development is still coming from the US.

    Programming - Pros:

    1. Coding / Technology
    2. Good money
    3. Manageable stress

    Programming - Cons:

    1. Not enough coding
    2. Too much documentation/procedure (thanks, Enron and Sarbanes-Oxley)
    3. Redundant requests

    I'll take it. Giddy up!

    Pros
    1. Interesting work - if you don't like it, get out or get a different job that is interesting

    Cons
    1. Can be difficult always catching and learning to ride the next wave.

So, any of you in the SF Bay area?

That's where I'm aiming to land after (hopefully) graduating in 2-3 yrs with an MSCS or MCS (probable MCS).

I know the situation is likely to change by then, but if nothing else it will be interesting to look back three years from now and see the responses in this thread.

Are there any good post-bubble-burst jobs out there (SF Bay area)? What skills/languages are in demand out there?

It's too difficult to answer the question "what should a developer in Texas make"? The tools you use, your years of experience, whether you're hourly vs. salaried, the demand in your skillset, the type of company you work for will make the result so varied. Like Cohen was saying in another thread, .Net programmers can make 6 figures whereas I've also seen job postings for them to make around $60-$70k.

I'm about to take up some VB, C#, or php lurnin' for fun - not sure yet which one. I've always loved programming since I was a little kid, but I don't think I could ever do it for a company (automation tools aside) - they'd kill what I'd love to do and then beat me into submission over the head with it. lol.

If you plan on living there, I hope you land 3 good development jobs to pay your rent/mortgage. :D

Definitely be expecting an email from me, because my wife and I want to move to Austin around late June, and I happen to be an experienced C# .NET developer.

Should I just use the BBS link?

    :)

Have you ever looked into verification. You get to find problems in other peoples crap and you can write your tools anyway you want.

When not doing my honky Blind Lemon Jefferson thing at night, I work in IT during the day.

I started in tech support in 1983 and currently work in ERP Security/System Administration/Infrastructure Management. I've done some functional side stuff as well...fit/gap, specs, testing & training.

I tried programming/developing but never really enjoyed it. I didn't like sitting and just cranking out code all day. It's pretty much the only thing I haven't done as a fulltime gig in 20+ years of working in IT.

Uh... you e-mailed me from the last thread, I responded, you didn't, then I sent a follow-up and still never heard anything back.

Is one of us experiencing senility... er... e-mail problems? ;)

C# is hot. Seems like it sucked the life out of VB and C++.

And maybe you should conisder a small company that let's you have a lot of autonomy. ;)
