You said Elliot Smith? Then checkout Bright Eyes...

    "Poison Oak" for example...

    DaRude - Sand Storm

I don't know much about techno, but that's definitely one of the best techno songs.

Also, Rasselas. I don't know any of the bands you've mentioned but if you're looking for dark, pessimistic guys who have commited suicide... look no further than Layne Staley, lead singer of Alice In Chains. One of my favorite bands. Everyone should have a little piece of AIC in their collection.

Try Tindersticks, their second album is the best IMO. Remember to buy the double pack that includes a live album.

Or you may want to try some Nick Cave, get Murder Ballads, the Boatman's Call or No More Shall We Part if you are more into dark and slow songs.

Actually that's Mark Kozelek's original band. One of the best albums of this decade is Kozelek's work with Sun Kil Moon. The album Ghosts of the Great Highway is a classic.

I like your taste in music sir. I’m also very impressed that you know who the Great Lake Swimmers are. Do you listen to the CBC Radio 3 podcast by chance? If you like listening to new bands then this is the best review of new Canadian bands you’ll find. Don’t confuse it with Radio 3's R3-30, however, which is a horrible show, horrible to the point of being embarrassing. Grant Lawrence’s Radio 3 podcast out of Vancouver is the one to listen to. Here’s a recent one.

Sorry for bringing up an old thread but listening to Cohen reminded me of this thread. Rasselas - have you gotten a chance to listen to Leonard yet? If you have - what do you think?

Brightside - the Sun Kil Moon album is magnificent (I have to try to find it to put on my iPod but I hadn't seen it around my house for awhile :( ).

One artist I forgot that is dark and brilliant is the star-crossed Nick Drake. He only did 3 studio albums but they are all worth your time to listen to, especially "Pink Moon".
