I don't think it shows poor character. VSpan and JVG just don't get along. Spanoulis has too dominant a character for control freak JVG. It is probably best that they part ways. JVG would probably like for him to leave, too. That is not to say that V Span is totally ready to play. Just that he cannot get along with a control freak.
Greek (orthodox) easter is on this week. There's church every night but most ppl go Friday and Saturday. So Span might be there...
oops sorry mate i didn't realize. I'm not from Houston(or USA) myself so would know where he'd go.I can't wait for that Sunday spit though and I'd bet so does Vspan.!!!
You dont frickin' know what youre talkin about!!! This guy was not given an opp. at all. He would not have come over if the Rockets hadnt promised him PT. Hes doing the right thing... No VALID competitor will just sit on the bench while he knows he can help. HE's head and shoulders above Rafer Alston and could probably be an elite player... IVE actually seen this guy play many games... and it kills me to see his talented wasting away on the bench. Van Gundy is an egotistical moron with a Napoleon complex.
That might be true wrt to JVG. After all Barkely and Larry Bird in the top 50 could not play for Bobby Knight. Bird transferred in college away from Kinght and Knight cut Barkely from the Olympic team, (back when only college guys played on our team) though according to many Barkely was the best player in camp and that included Jordan. Barkely and Bird just could not stand Knight's rigid authoritarianism.
Maybe JVG is Vspan's Bobby Knight then, but it seems like other than Bonzi, Vspan, and a couple of other malcontents, everyone else seems to respect JVG & has elevated their defensive play, at the very least, under his tutelage. maw sounds exactly like the guys I've heard blowing smoke up Vspan's ass. Maaayyyybee Vspan can be elite one day. That's a looooooonnggg mayyyybeee. More likely he can be a nice, complementary player in this league. I hope he can be elite, but I'm also realistic in my expectations. "Head & shoulders above Rafer?" Please. I said earlier that I wanted to punch Rafer in the mouth after his Jazz game 3, but if you think the Rockets are better served with Spanoulis STARTING right now, you are high. "Seen him play many games" as a justification? In Greece? LMAO! I'M GREEK and follow the league there and I can tell you that it doesn't count for crap as far as a comparison to the NBA! His good play there PROBABLY shows that he MIGHT be able to play at the NBA level. All I'm pointing out is that there are probably reasons for these kind of stories leaking out to the Greek press. The team doesn't need this, and Vspan really needs to get his **** together as far as what the people around him fill his head with & leak to the media.
I think Spanoulis would want to stay for one more year, it seems that his manager wants him to move on. I'd say that he should stay in the nba and work his way to the rotation in Rockets or another team... I doubt he's negatively influenced by his Greek buddies, his mama or the church congregation gang... He seems to be a disciplined guy, and needs a good environment (that he has) and some trust from his coach (he hasn't) to produce. He's a pro and will try to find the better situation for him... imo he should try to crack the rotation in Houston, if that doesn't work for any reason the Rockets management has to be honest and let him go.
I don't think V Span is that ready to beat out Rafer or play big minutes-- just that he and JVG both have big egos that clash. T Mac and Yao and Rafer and Juwan etc. are not like that. So we largely agree.
i think there's more to it than, ie representing greece and playing in the olympics. sitting on the bench isn't going to improve his play even if it's the best basketball league in the world cause he's ultimately just sitting on the bench and losing his game. if van gundy is the coach next season, a likely situation, they should release him.
I remember when Steve Nash got drafted... by the Suns... I doubt many here would... I followed him because he was from my home town and a Canadian boy... ill admit... I never thought he would turn into the player he is today... but if you look at his first year stats... he was horrible... I got to see 2 of the games he played his first year... and the stats didnt lie.... but still there was potential... it took him getting traded to Dallas before he finally got the play time he deserved... im not saying Vspan... is Steve Nash in hiding... but I am saying... while we have Rafer and JL3 the Suns had Jason Kidd, Kevin Johnson, Sam Cassell and Wesley Person so I can understand why Nash got so little play time... its too late now... but we really should have given our rookies and role players more play time... like others said they are unknowns we cant count on now as we enter the playoffs..
I was speaking mostly about Vspan rather than Bonzi... And I meant that the "chatter" is mainly amongst fans here... I doubt there is chatter in the team ranks.... As someone else mentioned, Span has never said anything bad about the team or his teammates.... Now, if Rafer for example gets distracted by a couple of hundred people on this board discussing whether or not Span is better than him than he is a very weak character... And that is true for ANY rockets player.... I'm not singling rafer out...Just mentioned him as an example... Players should know that fans have their favourites and their obsessions and their "hometown boys" etc. and really shouldnt take note....
