I'm currently trying to schedule an appt with an orthopedist and wanted to get people's experience with this injury.
It sucks! It also depends on how bad it is, whether you messed up cartilage around it and such. I tore mine back in 2000 and had the surgery and rehabed. The injury itself was not painful for me, it was the few days following surgery that were agonizing Just be sure to do all the rehab as best you can to get your range of motion all back. Good luck!
What, your magic wand didn't work? Hi-YO!!!!! [rimshot] Seriously speaking, though, I tore my MCL 25% and had to sit for 1 1/2 years until it healed itself. I had endomiscectomy on the right leg. Not fun at all. I got fat as well.
Rehab as fast as you can. And I mean every chance you get, otherwise your muscle atrophy will just make things a lot more difficult. Also, the pain after the surgery will be really bad. I actually had a different knee surgery that cut open my whole knee but I can imagine that a regular arthroscopy should be no different. Seriously, brace yourself for the pain.
Tore my MCL and ACL, and the pain was unbearable. Couldnt walk for a week. After surgery be sure to start rehabbing the muscle around your knees, quad, hamstrings, etc. It will help you heal faster and get back to normal.
agreed with the above on rehabbing to prevent atrophy. i didn't rip any ligaments.. but i had foot surgery and wasn't allowed to put any weight on my right leg for 6 weeks. Definite atrophy down to a 5 year old's leg muscles..
Crazy how many people tear their ACL. So common, yet like 15 yrs ago peoples careers in sports would have been over with because of it. I have a friend who tore his ACL about 1 yr ago. Just now got back into playing sports, and he tore his meniscus (sp?) only a month recovery for that, but still. Crazy
Yeah. I tore my ACL, MCL, and lateral meniscus last July. I'm still not playing sports yet, although I was able to sprint while jogging for the first time last week. The recovery sucks. You just have to be patient and not over or under do it. And yes, the week after surgery is the worst.
I went there when I broke my arm. Didn't rehab though. It's a pretty good place. Anywho, did you tear it? have you had an MRI? Has the doctor look at it? What'd you do? I'm interested in all this stuff. ACL's take usually at least 4 to 6 months to recover from...a lot of times longer. A lot of people who injure them feel like they cans till go on and perform whatever they're doing, but when they try and cut and backpedal and stuff, they fall.
P.S. Like others said, if you haven't had it checked out, hope it's a meniscus injury. Many people can go about normal activities with a torn meniscus. I tore mine my sophomore year of high school (a rather large tear, too), but I kept working out through the pain. I ended up getting by on it for four years. I just had it taken care of, and now I'm fine. It took me a month or two to get back to 90%.
damn, maybe i should get my knee checked out, it hurts after i play ball or run a lot, kinda feels sore, im thinkin its tendinitis? who knows..its been like that for years now..i rest it for about a week and it doesnt hurt anymore until i play again..
I hurt it playing basketball right before i was about to shoot a layup....my knee just buckled and I heard a pop....next thing you know I'm in unbearable pain and rolllin all over the ground...I am supposed to get an MRI later on this afternoon....Im trying to get a hold of an orthopedic specialist that has worked with my co-worker in the PT dept....Im pretty worried since I am in the PT field and currently missing work and can hardly walk....
My exact injury. (although I had a partial MCL tear as well I guess, but I was told they rarely actually surgically repair a torn MCL) The surgeon who performed mine was Dr. David Edelstein at the main Kelsey-Seibold clinic on Holcomb. I was very pleased with the results. Look into the allograft procedure. My sister got the hamstring graft or whatever and she's had some problems with it.
