I think they would have made that call no matter who was there, if the ref had been in the same position. If you watch, the ref is right there, and his eyes are aimed at Kobe's feet the whole time. He wasn't really looking up to see who was coming to trap Bryant, he was just in the right place to make the right call.

Kobe traveled because he wasn't expecting the double team to come at him that soon and he was dribbling towards a corner. It was a brutally obvious travel. No ref could swallow their whistle in that case (he took 4 or 5 steps).

he had been doing everything and I promise his teammates were just standing around watching him. When he was about to be trapped and looked to pass of course nobody was there. i don't think a teammate of his touched the ball other then on a rebound or something like that in the final 4 minutes of the game of ot.

The play was so obvious they would've called it even if it was Earl Boykins and Darrick Martin double teaming him.

Kudos to the Refs last night. They called the game very tight. Each team got a fair amount of calls. Props to the ref for having the balls to make that call in LA, against Kobe, with the game on the line. I disagree when people say calls like that shouldn't be made at that point in the game. Rules are rules.

Well what is done is done- and I am glad we won>.

If you are talking about calls- Kobe getting the time to shoot the 3 to send into overtime was facilitated by Luke Walton having an armlock on Chuck Hayes which in normal times would be a foul.

Anyway I am not at all happy about how we finish games- Man that Rafer turnover was something you could see happening even before Yao gave him the ball. Note to Big Yao- dont pass the ball with little time on the clock- you are our best free throw shooter

Kobe was cross dribbling and ready to attack the rim when Yao came out to isolate him with Tmac in mid court. Superstars rarely do those kind of TO especially when the game is down the wire.

That call is a big slam on Kobe's face, I love it.

ugh, referee looks more carefully when Yao is there, I agree.

Ronnie Nunn has admitted on his show that the NBA has been inconsistent in the past in terms of when to make a big call. So the perception that many announcers and former players have is correct: ticky tack calls weren't made during crunch time. But nowadays, the NBA is pretty clear: all fouls and violations are treated the same and called the same no matter when in the game it is. Now does this mean the refs follow those rules all the time? No, but at least that's what the official stance is.

that's my point. i think the call was right, but that because it was Yao that came to double, the refs were more likely to not swallow the whistle....

It would be a welcome change. That way players know what they are supposed to do on defense. I mean if you can punch or roundhouse someone when there is less than a minute left, then how are players supposed to know what is a foul and what isn't? They won't know how aggressive they can be on D.

not to mention Kobe travelled on the 3 pointer that made it a 3 pt game in the closing minute of the 4th quarter.

He definetly travled, skipped a bit, and then lost his pivot.

Kobe has proved two things to me...1) he's the best individual player in the nba...hands down..no one is even close....2) he's the worst teamate anyone could ever have...why does Jackson allow this trash???

no way a team can win with this style of play...scoring so many points and having little to no assists wont get it done against great defensive teams like us, spurs, and mavs...when kobe scores over 50, the lakers are 6-2...but that stat is skewed, because those wins came against sub .500 teams and they were barely wins at that...i am all for kobe scoring 100 pts as long as they keep losing...let all the media cover him and the lakers only to see them get their a$$es handed to them in the first round by either spurs or phx...we are flying below the radar, and will go deep while no one expects it...this is going to be a great year...can't wait...

oh yeah and kobe traveled for sure...that was absolutely 100% the correct call regardless of superstar or no superstar...

I don't think it had anything to do with WHO was doubling Kobe, just that he was, in fact, doubled. Kobe's right in that that sort of travel happens all the time, but usually it is out at the top of the key right after a player gets a pass and kind of shuffles his pivot feet before he gets set to run a play or make a move. In this situation, he traveled in response to a defensive trap that the Rockets set on him. I think in that situation, when it is as obvious as it was, you have to make that call.

Hell, they called Juwan for traveling when he was tripped not long before that, so if he really wants to cry about poor refereeing for that game, then I'm more than confident the Rockets could come up with MANY more examples than the Lakers.

they called in BECASUE of the trap
the trap forced the ref to pay close intention because most of the time wen u trap
    A) some1 gets fouled
    or
    B) turnover
and the ref was rite behind kobe as well

You have a point. I don't think they would have called travelling on the all-mighty Kobe Bryant who is also the face of the NBA at the crucial moment of the game if the one who trapped him was Chuck Hayes.

Exactly. I was completely astonished the ref had the stones to make that call given the circumstances. Major props to that guy since I can't say I would have done the same.

That travel was as blatent and clear-as-day as the play where he fouled T-Mac on that 3-pt attempt. Both of which he vehemently protested.
