$2.1 million is for the land and the pre-existing house on the property that's being knocked down to make way for Lebron's castle. I'm sure Lebron's castle is going to cost a lot more to construct than $2.1 million.
If you've got the money and it's legal, I have no problem how you spend it. And they aren't hypocrites about their spending behavior either. As for donations and charity, I'm sure Lebron, as well as most basketball players, donate some of their time and money. Probably more for PR than personal satisfaction. Aren't they required by the team/NBA to do some publicity volunteer work at the very least? Good point about the resale value though. No way in hell is someone going to buy that house in Akron, Cleveland, or anywhere else in Ohio. Ditto dntrwl's batcave idea. Bruce Wayne is a true baller.
"It is being built on 5.6 acres of land purchased, along with an 11-bedroom house, in 2003 for $2.1 million. " ================ geez...that's more than DIRT CHEAP
for all those "b****ing" about how Lebron spends his money, i'm sure all of you spend yours wisely, right? just b/c you can't afford what he can, it doesn't mean you're not guilty of frivoulous spending yourself. and just b/c we haven't read about any charities he's donated to doesn't mean he hasn't donated. i'm willing to bet he's given more than any of us make in a year. edit: oops a couple of posts too late. professorjay has already said it.
I'm not irate or anything about the fact that they make way too much money. I'm not jealous or anything. I'll always support the Rockets (even if I rarely go to games because I can't afford it). But...sorry if it miffs me a bit when Kelvin Cato signs a 42 million dollar contract while the average salary of a hard-working teacher in Texas is 38,000/year. And I completely disagree with your assertion that they DON'T make outrageous salaries in the context of their "job." That's life though. I'll get over it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
True teachers should make more money than they do but atheletes provide a service that makes billions every year and they deserve a portion of the goods. However, since they tend to have shorter careers with tons more injuries and little to no skills to do much else, they make about what they deserve. I know if my son played pro football or something where body takes more abuse than normal and will begin to break down earlier than the average human, I'd want him to make a few million a year to compensate for his troubles.

yea, it is a good thing for those billionaire spend their $$$$$ anyway, they made their contribution with GDP at least, I will bash them if they only save money into a bank
