Tonight, I will be rooting for Rockets--a confession of a labled "YOF"

I was a Lakers fan before that moment-Yao entered NBA. And I am still a Lakers fan. I follow them the whole season and root for them all the the time except when they play Rockets.

I have followed the Rockets since "that moment" and root for them every single game I watch. The reason, well, is because of Yao. But I do not just root for Yao, I root for everyone in the Rockets uniform. I am happy whenever Rockets win, good win or not. Admittedly I pay close attention to Yao's performance and stats, but it is secondary to the team's goal bare ocasionally when a win is not of much meanning and Yao's stats reaching a milestone.

I do not know if I will be watching Rockets game the same way after Yao leave. For that reason, I dare not call myself a "true Rockets fan" in fear of offending some of the "true Rockets fan" .

I have no intention to stir up anything. I just honestly give the facts in hope we can understand and respect each other from different groups.

I will be rooting for Rockets tonight. Do not flame me before the game is over. Until then we are on the same boat.

I don't think anyone here hates "YOF's" based on nothing. The YOFs we don't appreciate are the ones that bash T-mac in order to defend Yao, bash posters that bash Yao when the criticism is warranted, believe that Yao should be traded to a team in California because it would be better for him, etc...

I don't think most people around here have a problem with the fact that there are YOF; that much is a given and it's obvious to everyone, and in a way it's good even because we have a different type of fanbase now for the Rockets.

On the other hand, the YOFs that everyone loves to hate are those overbearing, obnoxious YOFs who consistently knock other Rockets players down just for the sake of propping up Yao. Those are the types of fans that would pop into a game thread and complain about Yao not getting his touches when the team wins, or get too defensive when someone makes a passing criticism (sometimes even a perceived slight that might not be there to begin with) of Yao's play in a particular game.

Those guys know who they are, and thankfully have largely stopped posting with exception of a few who seem to get off on pissing everyone off with their typical dumb commentary.

So it's your 'tone' as a YOF that determines whether or not you're accepted by this online community. If you love Yao and you don't feel the need to deride his teammates for not getting him the ball every single time down the court so he can get 50, then you will be OK.

With that, welcome to the BBS! :)

    Welcome,

I used to dislike some YOF because I felt they added unneccesarry complaints and brought the quality of the board down (I remember when this board was more positive and not the constant b!tch fest it is now) and some of the other traits mentioned around here.

Lately I've realized that it wasn't due to YOF, but rather a side effect of this board getting larger (the influx of new Chinese fans due to Yao was one of the huge boosts)and obvioiusly it will start moving towards the direction of espn and other message boards. So I don't feel that having YOF in of it self will hurt the boards.

Lastly, I've become FOF (Stevie Franchise) and YOF (Vince Young only fans), i follow their respective teams, but wouldn't if they go to another team. There's nothing wrong with being an "_OF", as long as proper respect is shown.

Whew...let me take a breath first...

I swear I would not have started my first thread right before the game had I known what was going to happen.

I read the other thread and felt like to write something and there was some time left before the game. I meant everything I wrote, including rooting for the Rockets. I did not realize I just put some extra pressure on myself. As the game going, I found myself getting nervous. I did not want to jinx the Rockets (especially Yao). I am not a religious guy. But I do occasionlly get superstitious, and that was one of those few moments. I certainly did not expect both my favorate teams make it to the extreme.

All is well that ends well. And I am happy to find out I have a strong heart ;)

I appreciate the nice comments and encouragement from many of you guys. For those who do not buy what I said, not a problem. We have at least one thing in common, rooting for the rockets :p

    good night everyone!

I read the Lakers board after this game. What gets me are comments like 'lakers are a yao ming away from a championship'. They still talk like they can just pick any players in the league they want. Why are you Lakers fans so full of yourselves?

But we'd never say we are a dawyne wade or dirk or even kobe away from a ring.

You know why - because we're actually much closer - maybe just a tj ford or a mo peterson.

You see, the Lakers say that because they really are kind FAR away. They aren't winning a ring anytime soon.
