    formula for roundtrip:

    Cost = 2[(cost of gas per gallon)/(mpg)*(miles to work)]

    example
    cost of gas per gallon = $2.40
    mpg = 25
    miles to work = 7

    Cost = 2[2.40/25*7] = $1.34

    If I go to the office it is only:

    Cost = 2[2.40/13*1] = $.39

    Its probably not even a full mile but parking garage to parking garage maybe...

    When I go to clients I get reimbursed any mileage over normal commute which is everything over a mile for me!!... :D

    Think its 45 or 49 cents now....so I make money in theory (not if you take into account depreciation)

    i've always wondered about that. sure, i get paid more per mile than it costs me in gas but it's got to be totally offset with depreciation, no?

    $2.40

    20 mpg

    0.25 miles to work

    Cost = 2*(2.40/20*.25) = 6 cents

    (Most of the time I walk.)

    I live in Pittsburgh, PA...

    Cost of Gas: $2.60/gallon
    Miles to work and back: 44
    Mpg: 28

    Cost = (2.60 * (44/28)) = $4.08

    Cost = 2[($2.40/28)*5.3]= $0.91. Not too shabby.

    Thats why they pay you more, it is supposed to take into account depreciation of your vehicle with more miles. Who knows how accurate it is though...somethings better than nothing though

    That's another thing people don't take into account. Depreciation and maintainance. I'm sure there's a formula floating around out there somewhere.

    Aside from not paying a dime to drive to work, my wife and I only need one vehicle between us, which reduces our costs even more.

    And the intangables of living close to work are priceless. Quality of life is king, IMO. Waking up at 7:40 to be at work by 8, going home for lunch and spending time with my family, being home at 5:05, and not dealing with frustrating traffic is priceless. (and I suppose this increases my overall health, so that's another cost right there)
