Every time I see someone quote a Luffy1 post, I am reminded of why he is on my ignore list. Which coaches haven't benefited from the draft, exactly?
I don't understand why a TV commentator is allowed to look around the NBA, choose a team that just drafted a 7'6" guy who can shoot the lights out, and pick that coaching job as opposed to another. Seems to me that's kind of unfair, stacking the odds in your favor, so even if you're not a very effective coach, you can still win most games with the player talent you inherited. Why not open it up and have a wide-open lottery where a broadcaster who wants to get back into coaching can end up anywhere, like coaching the Bucks or Celtics? Then maybe we'd hear less of this Ayn-Rand meritocratic b***s**** from such coaches.
How is it that you manage to turn every issue into a critique of JVG? JVG shouldn't be allowed to say this because he's only coached teams that have benefited from the draft...what does that even mean? Only coaches that are on teams where all their good players come from free agency should be allowed to critique the draft system?
I say if a team is going to tank the season, let them. All it does is foster a culture of losing signed, San Antonio. kidding aside, i know what you mean. i would think you eliminate playoff teams and have drawing for the rest of the picks, all with equal shot of getting a #1. How is it that you manage to turn every issue into a critique of JVG? i dont know how he does it. is it his 'online' character? It use to be funny b/c i thought he was just joking. Now i am not quite so sure. needless to say i am affraid for my safety knowing that people that ridiculous are out there. btw, how do you ignore?
Click on his username view public profile then in the upper right there is an "ignore user" button. Then hope no one quotes him in their response! LOL
This is what I respect about Van Gundy. He will take a spin on conventional wisdom and give me something to think about. I defense of Van Gundy - when he took the job - I'm not sure he really knew what we had here. Steve, Cuttino, Mo Taylor...Sorry Luffy- It's not like it was set up on a platter for him. We all had a good feeling about Yao Ming-and I think you could argue he was a proven -known quantity...... Please - Van Gundy zealots- I am not dogging your boy. Do not hyperventilate. In All Fairness: He took a risk here.... go Rockets!!!
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/English_football_league_system If we want to prevent teams from purposely tanking, one way might be to adopt a similar system to the English Premier League. This system uses relgation as motivation to not finish in the bottom three. I've always liked this system and would like to see something like it be used in American sports. We would not longer have to watch horrible season after season of teams like the Atlanta Hawks, Oakland Raiders, and Kansas City Royals. Instead, the highest finishers from the next highest league would get to have a chance to make it in the NBA, NFL, or MLB. Also, how would frugal owners like Donald Sterling change if they aren't guaranteed NBA-size crowds every season? (Of course he actually has changed in the past few years). Just a thought. I, of course, realize this would NEVER happen, but I've always thought it would be an interesting talking point.
I can see it now, a multi million dollar franchise and once prestigious Celtics is sent down to the NBDL, where they play the bakersfield jam.
Joke all you want man but that system works. The crappy team plays their heart out to make sure they are not relegated.
Anyone remember one of JVGs other interesting ideas...i want to say that it was to eliminate players fouling out??? i cant remember for sure what it was, but it was also one of those things that really makes you think a bit differently
Haven't the long dynasties where certain teams just dominate the game for extended periods of time (with the tweener teams coming and going) always been the most successful periods for the NBA?
Why don't we have a lottery to determine all of our jobs instead of the popular process of having people choose which jobs they apply, interview, and letting the employers choose who they want?
This is BS. People are making the assumption that any team could become a playoff team by having the #1 draft pick and drafting the next great player. Look at the top 10 teams right now. Mavs, Suns, Spurs, Jazz, Rockets, Pistons, Lakers, Cavs, Bulls, Heat How many of these teams are where they are now solely because they got lucky and turned a top 5 pick into the star of the team? Cavs- Drafted Lebron, and that move alone is really all thats keeping them in the top 10 right now. How many drafted well, but also got most of their team by other means? Spurs- Drafted Tim Duncan, but developing Manu and Parker as well as making some key signings helped them get to where they are Rockets- Drafted Yao, traded for Tmac, Battier, Alston, Snyder, Howard, signed Hayes, Mutombo, drafted Head late in the draft. Heat- Drafted Wade, but they became good when they signed Shaq Suns- Drafted Amare, drafted Marion too, but signed Nash.. nuff said. All the other teams maybe had 1 high draft pick that isn't even the star of their team, the rest of the players they got from trades and developing their low picks like the rest of the league. Point is, elite teams aren't made on #1 picks.
