Anyone remember how Atlanta Braves pitchers Tom Glavine and Greg Maddox would always been given calls off the outside edge of the plate no matter what calls the other pitchers got? The same could be said for Michael Jordan's left-arm push off, Utah's moving screens, the early 90's Knicks hand checking and any number of other moves in sport where guys are given advantages because of consistency. In the case of Glavine and Maddox, they were so accurate and consistent, umpires just got used to it. For Yao, the problem is the opposite. He doesn't get calls that others do. JVG has said that it is all big men, but I think it is really just guys like Yao and Shaq. They are a dying breed - the true low post big man. Athletic big men like Amare Stoudamire and others get what Yao doesn't - calls from the officials. It sucks. That is all.
agreed there has been at least 5 different plays in the second half where there was a foul and nothing was called at all. compound that with chandler and other hornets getting the same exact calls on the other end and that spells L no matter what
Frankly, this game isn't any better or worse than any other. There have been games that have been alot worse than tonight.
todays loss is on Yao.... we all know Yao, does not get the calls he should get... to the point its almost a given these days... and a non topic... but I would like to say... Yao or the coaching staff... should realize ... that at some point if... your shots are not falling... either because you are missing... or someone is fouling you in the process... then Yao needs to get even more aggressive... and take the ball to the hoop... even if you have two defenders on you, or get a offensive foul.... I for one would rather see Yao on the bench, fouled out... then on the floor shooting jump shots at the end of a game... hell if YAo is not getting calls... a nice elbow... and 1 game suspension would be fine with me... until Yao learns this... we wont win a championship... unless we get some pitt bulls beside him....
Maybe he should take some Shaqfu lessons. Seriously, he attacked the basketball and the outcome was no different. Its like the refs totally ignore what's happening to Yao below his head.
Yao or Van Gundy need to get a T. The refs will call the fouls if someone on the Rockets gets in their face about it.
I agree. Too bad, Yao thinks it's not nice to elbow people. Being nice is more important than winning to Yao.
He did try to take it to the basket in the 4th quarter and got no-call hacked about 3 times in a row. After that it was obvious that it just wasn't his night, and he basically didn't touch the ball thereafter. I'm not sure what Yao could have done better on defense, a lot of the boards he surrendered came on times when he helped on the penetrator and tyson chandler thus moved to the open spot and got the board. There were a lot of contested shots by Paul and Mason that usually don't go in that often.
It's true. Brothers hates Yao. Yao dropped 38 pts on Indiana, last year, in spite of Brothers. Yao got only his 2nd technical foul, last year, from Tony Brothers. http://www.sportingnews.com/yourturn/viewtopic.php?p=471343
^ thats my point... how many of you who play basketball... and can stay cool... when your getting repeatedly fouled and... and gettting no calls...kudos to Yao... for that... reverting to jump shots is the wrong thing to do... taking the ball to the hoop with a errant elbow... or a hard shoulder in the stomach.... enough to put your guy down for a few minutes... is what he should have done...
while I do believe yao doesnt get many calls in his favor, I dont think its that egregious or bias of a situation. In fact I think most of the calls that are missed when refereeing Yao is before he gets the ball rather than after. Fact is Yao doesnt punished the defense inside nor does he force the issue or attack the rim and those are the actions/moves which most often leads to getting calls. For the most part, Yao's offensive game is turnaround jumpshots, hooks and layins. On those types of plays, its hard to get calls for an opponent pushing or bumping against him, unless it is blantantly obvious. In tonights case, I dont believe Yao was officiated poorly. While a few call could have been called in his favor in the second half, most of the noncall were in the spirit of how the game was being called, which was letting them play. Yao had a bad game but it was due to poor officiating, Simply put he had a bad shooting night. The vast majority of the shots he missed were shots he typically makes. Many were "easy" (for him) turnarounds, face ups, and a couple hooks within 5 feet of the rim. He didnt missed them because of being fouled, he simply just missed. Every player has a night where they are just off and tonight was Yao's.
He should of started to take it to the hole way before the 4th quarter. As I said, he is taking way too many jump shots.
I agree. My impression is that after Yao was back, he's been taking way too many jump shots. (It may be coach's instruction? Because the other night when Yao tried to dribble and lost the ball, JVG yelled to Yao 'Just face up and shoot the ball') He is really playing soft right now. Hope it is because he is still in the process of getting his game back and he has bad fingers. But tonight, he definately looked so soft!
Jeff, This was a truly pointless post. Not one of your finer moments on this BBS. All you had to say is that Yao does not get calls. A baseball analogy - a bad one that you even admit does not apply - added nothing to you opinion about calling fouls on/for Yao. Over and out, Pass 1st, Shoot 2nd
