I'll download it when I get home. Still waiting though for the firmware update for the Blu-ray aspects of the machine.
Whoa there... backward compatibility (I'm assuming that's what you mean by BC) is a HUGE reason I'm considering buying a PS3 rather than a 360. How badly will the BC be "damaged" on the newer model? Do I need to find a used one to get decent BC? Should I just buy a 360 instead?
The European models that will use the new solution for BC will initially be around 75% BC (something like 1700 out of 2400 PS2 titles). But it seems like a lot of high profile games have some issues, or may not be supported at all. I can give you a link to the list of supported games if you want to check to see how many games you have that are compatible (and how "compatible" they are). Depending on when you are planning on getting a PS3, you wouldn't have to get a used PS3. I'd imagine that most of the new PS3s bought in the next few months or so will be 98% BC (even if Sony starts shipping the new models pretty soon). Now if you buy one a year from now or so, you might have to find used systems with the necessary hardware. And that might not be very easy to do. I don't know enough about your gaming preferences to tell you whether you should get a PS3 or 360. BC is still pretty high (and might improve more over time), but that might not be enough for you.
Yeah, I'd appreciate a link that said what games were still BC, even with this new reduced BC. I'm planning on buying one June-ish. Am I in danger of getting reduced BC in that case? And how would I know?
Here's the BC page for European titles (I'd look under the UK section I guess): http://faq.eu.playstation.com/bc/ There are 3 levels of BC: no issues, minor issues, and "noticeable" issues. We have no idea what those mean at the moment. There are a lot of people from Europe on a few of the message boards I visit, so I'll keep an eye out on the results they get when trying various PS2 games (including those not on the list). I may bump an older thread about PS3 BC if there's anything worth mentioning. I don't think Sony has officially announced when they'd start shipping these system to the US (not even sure if they'll announce this). One report said that they would be doing so in April or May, but I'm not exactly sure where that came from. Once this move is made, you'd obviously have a better shot at finding an older model the sooner you buy one. I doubt there will be a giant "98% BC" sticker on the box or anything like that. Perhaps there will be a model number that you can look for though. As you can tell, there are still some details to be worked out. Again, I'll try to mention any updates that would be useful to gamers that want to buy a PS3 with the older BC solution (98% BC).
