How many of you are familiar with Watchman? I really don't know anything about the comic.

I haven't read the comic but know the general premise.

superheroes that are in reality very vile individuals.

All I hear is praise for it and will probably eventually check out the graphic novel.

There not really vile but very flawed. Great graphic novel but while character development might be superfluous to 300 The Watchmen is all about character development.

Can't wait. Whoever don't know about the Watchmen:

    wiki'd

They did a pretty good job translating the 300 comic book to film.

I haven't read the comic, but if they stay true to it like they did Sin City and 300 I'll be happy. I love seeing these books come to life almost frame for frame and word for word.

It's an amazing book and if you don't read comics, you should at least give this one a try because it should really count as literature, plain and simple. There are plenty of english profs who use the book in their courses. Trying to explain it is hard, so I recommend the Watchmen wiki for background, but it's much better to just go down to Barnes & Noble or Borders, buy a copy, read it like you would any other novel and enjoy. I think I'm going to read it again because it has been a while.

If you do plan to read it, be sure you don't spoil the ending for yourself if you do check out the wiki.

I handed my copy to buddy at work just this week.

I agree that the premise isn't that the heroes are "vile", but that they aren't idealized. Take your Captain America or Superman and they just don't seem like people you know. This graphic novel stuffs reality and superheroes into a bottle and shakes it up. Some are good but have personal issues, some are in desperate need of therapy, some have a skewed perspective of things, etc. Look at what happens to child stars when they get all that fame and money. They end up pretty screwed up. Same principle here. Interesting vision of how global politics and history are altered by them, as well.

As far as it becoming a film, I guess they could give it the Sin City treatment, but I'm not sure it really calls for it. It needs to be dark and visceral. Comic book characters but in a painfully real world.

that isn't really the premise. there are some vile people in the story, but the story is not about how vile they are. the story itself is a social critique (moore wrote it during and as a response to the cold war), but its appeal goes far beyond its plot. i personally didn't find the social critique aspect as compelling as the storytelling itself. watchmen is a beautifully told story. from the characters, who are incredibly deep, to the presentation. reading the book is like watching a movie, which makes it ironic that it is such a difficult book to translate into a move. it is also riddled with incredible visual and dramatic irony and incredibly emotional moments. ultimately, it is

oops. ultimately it is probably one of the best reads i've ever had, because the story is weaved so intricately. but the underlying story itself isn't that great.

I just read "The Watchmen" this weekend and loved it though I thought the ending was a little disappointing.

The Watchmen is a must read in my opinion, even if you don't like comics.

It's been a few years since I read it but I can't wait to see what snyder does with it

It will be dissapointing if this ends up being mostly about action and violence since its mostly about the human flaws of the character.

if snyder is attempting a frame by frame retelling, i would love to see some split screen during the chapter focusing on rorschach- i dont see how else they could pull off the "mirrored" pages aspect of his story that i loved so much...

also, how they handle rorschach is essential. if they pull any punches with his character, the film wont have the same impact.
