Kelly, I just thought that you overreacted. People (including myself) might be ignorant about how people with HIV are medically treated and how much HIV drugs cost. But it is not the same as "ripping on" rich people. I failed to see any posts in this thread implying that Magic being alive is a bad thing like you thought. No one is blaming Magic for spending money to stay alive.
In some cases, just because you have a lot of money does lessen the chance that you get AIDS, but it's not 100%, a person can still develop the virus, but most don't. Still that chance is there. Also, cocktails do not work for everybody, so have reactions to the drugs and may cause other illnesses.
I totally agree with this. People who've survived after contracting HIV 25 years ago are the exception, not the rule. And (again we're painting with broader strokes here because there are always exceptions) most people did not have readily available access to the medications needed to combat this hideous virus 20 years ago. Or even 15 years ago when Magic announced his contraction. That being said, I didn't get the feeling that many posters here begrudged Magic for being able to access whatever treatments were being developed back in the early to mid-90's up to now. I think they were just making a comment based on their perspectives. I would think it would behoove us to maybe "debunk" any myths or misconceptions that are out there with good, sound information rather than get all "reactionary" and disparaging with an acerbic tone.
What a thoughtful and humanistic sentiment. Irrresponsible people do indeed deserve to die a horrible death. People raped by irresponsible people also deserve that sort of death. As do people who get blood transfusions from irresponsible people. As do gays. In fact, AIDS is a really handy enforcer of responsible behavior. It's like the police, but we don't have to pay it. Why are we fighting it at all? We should be thanking AIDS for killing off of those who behave irresponsibly. We should stop stopping the spread of disease killing off so many innocent people and fund judgementalism in general - we need more people with the guts to tell other people that they deserve to suffer. After all, it is a zero sum game - for each gay drug IV addict whose life you have saved, you are killing a cancer patient. ------------ AB: As usual. you show why you're one of my favorite posters on the board, thanks as always.
Kindof off topic, but I saw a commercial for some drug that was supposed to help you not spread herpes, and at the end when they are rattling off all the precautions, it says tell your doctor if your immune system is compromised by advanced AIDS, blah blah blah. If you have advanced AIDS, how concerned are you really going to be about spreading herpes?
Well, at least we now know who God favored during the Lakers/Celtics rivalry of the 80s. Magic gets HIV and lives forever and Dennis Johnson drops dead out of nowhere.
Nearly all people infected with HIV through blood transfusions received those transfusions before 1985, the year HIV testing began for all donated blood. The rate of Mother to Child transmission (MTCT), rape, and blood or blood product route as a percentage of all new HIV infections totals less than 1%. The other 99% stem from consensual sexual contact (the largest group) or intravenous drug use. Source: Center for Disease Control Irresponsible people don't deserve to die, but neither does the person who lives their life the right way, does nothing wrong or irresponsible, yet develops cancer. When it comes to fighting a disease, priority should be given to the disease who's victims contracted it through no fault of their own. Cancer is much more highly deserving of the funding and the resources.
