I just finished reading the quotes about going from Good --> Great. What will it take, etc?

I'd like to hear some ideas from anyone that has one on this issue:

How do we beat the Phoenix game plan that stops Yao? I'll rephrase, how do we punish teams for doubling Yao before the entry? How do we win, when they double early?

I, of course, have some ideas, but I pondered over them for all of 30 seconds before I decided to write this. I'll share after I go St. Patty-ing, but I'd rather read some ideas first and take some time to think about my own. We have until the playoffs to offer up the ideas. If we beat this 'D' in the playoffs, we can all take credit, whether we deserve it or not.

I know ya'll have some ideas! RiceDaddy7, you can start us off!

This site may not seem to influence the Rockets that much, but if we came up with something good enough that it couldn't be ignored, then yay us.

We sneak in to The EnergySolutions Arena in Utah and steal Jerry Sloan's playbook

I was thinking that if R2K or anyone else was willing to put up the full game phoenix bit torrent, we could each do a little research on the tape. Extra eyes help.

If it would help, I would consider doing it myself.

ok... for starters dont play thier up and down style of offense.. cause well lose that way... when i watched the pistons whip the suns... i noticed how they slowed the pace down to thier style of play

also they did a good job of rebounding, being agressive

i liked the way we were using chuck hayes alot when they would double yao...

and finally we need to drive to the basket more

Something tells me that Steve Novak could put up some points on their defense....They basically choose to leave our PFs roaming free.

    1. Closely watch their games against Utah, Detroit, and the Lakers. Those teams seem to know how to play them.

    2. Go deeper into the roster

    3. Win the rebounding battle, especially on the O-glass

    4. Play with big lineups in certain stretchs of the game, Yao, McGrady, Bonzi, Battier, and Snyder or Yao, T-Mac, Bonzi, Battier, and even Mutombo (when they play Kurt THomas and Amare together). But the last one would certainly make the Suns shoot jumpers all night, because they could not drive to basket. In 7 game series that will not be able to hit every shoot.
I know it's seems like a big risk, but it gives a better chance of winning the rebounding battle.

    5. Attack the basket with Yao setting up outside of the circle and paint, then using allowing cutters to get the basket for easy shots (this would also limit long rebounds).

    6. Don't shoot 3's unless we are leading by at least 7 -12 pts.

    7. Control the clock and don't take quick shoots and use fouls and even use a few interference plays, fouls will slow down the game

Here is how I would do it.

I would make Steve Nash win the game all by himself, I would NEVER double team him, I would tell the defenders to stay at home, if Nash scores 50, I think the Suns lose, because the rest of the team will be sitting around on the perimeter bored, and the movement will stop. In addition as soon as the Rockets SHOOT the ball, I would have the nearest guard deny the outlet pass to Nash - just what the Rockets did to the Lakers in '86 and it limited Magic Johnson's impact.

On offense, whenever they run that junk defense on Yao, I would have him flash to the high post and give a baseline screen and back cut and let Yao shoot the 15 footer or hit the cutters on the baselines for layups.

In addition a healthy dose of Pick and Roll, or pick and pop.

So, the 2 biggies in my book are...don't double Nash, pick him up as soon as WE shoot, and on offense integrate some High post offense and get Yao flashing to the free throw line and cutting to the basket on the PnR.

We tried it for maybe 5 minutes. Obviously we're desperate for an answer and I think we could afford to try it again....I'm not even a big fan of Novak, but you can't just leave him open from the 3 point line.
