I wanted to go to Mexico City a couple years back but couldn't. Now I have vacation coming and can go later this year.

I've been to Guadalajara and loved it but I need a new place to visit. Every Tapatio I met told me I need to experience Mexico City (or "Mexico" as they would say; drop the "City", to them it's just "Mexico"). Of course, they might just want to get the gringo killed ;) ("dile a el que vaya al D-F; menos un gringo en el mundo, no me importa"). But I doubt it.

I had asked anyone on the BBS at that time who has ever been to Mexico City what they think of the place but my memory fails now.

So, if anyone can enlighten me: PROS (Chapultepec? Xochimilco?) and CONS (I'm sure "pollution" and "crime" will pop up here).

some people take a dump outside in their front yard because they have no toilet or sewer system.

My uncle (who is originally Mexican, looks Mexican, has dual citizenship with the USA, and lives in Mexico south of Mexico city) was pistol-whipped by muggers on one occasion while in Mexico City.

On another occasion, he was in traffic at a red light with a car full of people. A gang went from car-to-car with pistols getting everybody's watches and wallets. When the light would turn green, the cars drive off. At the next red light, the gang had a fresh new batch of customers.

Six months ago, my family members went to a family reunion in Mexico city (I refused to go). They told me I had nothing to worry about. Later, they told me it was scary as hell. My older brother (white guy) got pulled over for "speeding" (he was, in fact, going a little slower than the rest of the traffic because he was unfamiliar with the roads). Cop took every dime of money he had. I'm thankful that's the worst that happened.

I have a friend who is originally from Mexico city and he never wants to go back because it's too scary for him.

    Don't do it.

Went there last year after 15+ years away. It's just SO dirty, polluted and crowded. Plus, there is a palpable sense of fear walking the streets as a gringo (even if I am half-Mex). I couldn't even really enjoy the city, I was so busy worrying about myself and my family.

I have two whiter than sour cream friends who just returned from a year long stint in Mexico city and they LOVED IT!

Beautiful city with tonnes of culture.

    I'd go.

I went in March a couple years ago. Certainly not the level of crime that I'm reading about in Mexico City.

    Beautiful climate.
    Great architecture.
Great excursions (Tlaquepaque, Lake Chapala, Tequila).

And, most important, and forgive my shallowness, really, really, really nice-looking women.

Yeah in Guadalajara you found a lot of pretty and hot women.

And about Mexico City, I live there so let me tell you my point of view:

    - PROS: Very beatiful city, with a lot of places to visit, a lot of museums, buildings, a beatiful zoo. and with a lot of good places to eat.

    - CONS: the crime is a factor (you have to be careful who is around and what places do you visit), but not a big factor like all these people says, I know a lot of people who live here and never been robbed and the pollution I dont think is much worse than other cities in the US. and about the water is where you drink it, you can buy bottles of water and you'll be fine

If you got any questions tell me ok.

Well, the accounts that I posted actually happened to my uncle, my brother, and my friend. It wasn't some stuff I read on the internet somewhere. Those are real accounts.
