Importance? At the end of the day - no one is that important. Not Hakeem, not Jordan - the only people who are important should be those in your life. Not on TV.

This isn't about importance - this is about the emotional affect they had on us. This is about us. It's not about remembering Clyde, it's about remembering something really special with him being the focal point that year.

There's no way you can overestimate that.

Sam and Robert won titles for the Rockets. they were just as important as Clyde. they didn't get their numbers retired.

Oh yeah - Horry and Cassell should be considered as well. It's not their fault they got traded.

here's the real question, if CHUCK won a championship with us, would they retire his number? he's just a legend as Clyde, plus his act of playing for the minimum just so he can get another player to play on the Rockets for the Max is one of the greatest acts of selflessness in Rockets history.

They won double the titles Clyde did with the Rockets. Maybe their numbers should be retired twice over. Elie's too.

arkoe and tinman are in accord.

If he played as big a role as Clyde did in the championship run then why not. Clydes jersey retirement is definately questionable but I just dont understand why you guys wouldnt want such a great players name hanging in the rafters considering he was still great as a Rocket. This wasnt Mutombo bein a shade of his former self (still a great center) but no where near as effective as Clyde was for the Rockets.

    Your premise:
I seriously think Clyde's importance to the history of the Rockets has been extrenely over stated by fans because of his UH roots.

is absolutely correct. His college years have inflated his connection to the Rockets.

Clyde was a buffoon as UofH head coach and he is definitely a below average commentator. But what he did for us after the trade in 1995 is priceless. The Rockets were sinking and our team chemistry was gone. Clyde gave us new life and we would not have won the 2nd championship without him. I will forever be grateful for that.

If I had no regard for "Phi Slamma Jamma" or if I was a shorter term Rockets fan with no solid memories of 1995, my feelings about Clyde would be quite negative. As it stands, he's like the relative who did you an unforgettable favor one time but you don't want to be around because they are always asking for something. Clyde's foray into coaching and announcing has ruined my opinion of him. I wish he had just retired from basketball so I could have kept him way up on my pedestal.

If the Lakers retire Horry's number, then the ROCKETS BETTER RETIRE HIS TOO!!!
Lets not forget during the Dream's schooling of David Robinson, it was HORRY who hit the game winner! it was Horry who showed Sean Elliot how to shoot 3s in crunch time.

But he lives his life for himself, not for you. Not to stay on your pedestal.

    dont forget Clyde dances too.

CLYDE DREXLER - Named One of the 50 Greatest Players in NBA History, Clyde the Glide was a member of the 1992 U.S. Olympic Dream Team. He began his career in 1983 with the Portland Trailblazers and retired in 1998 with the Houston Rockets, a team he led to the 1995 NBA Championship. ELENA GRINENKO, who returns for her second season, will be his partner.

Horry and Cassell, hmm whatever...If we're talking about length of service and contribution,

One Rocket played 5 full seasons with the Rockets before the championship (and STARTED ALL but 13 games)
One Rocket played with Hakeem in the 80s before the championship.
One Rocket was selected an All-Star as a ROCKET, BEFORE the championship.

    You know I'm talking about

If you can't retire the #s of the whole team, retire OTs in all their honor.

    Darlin', I'll do anything

Ooh, can I touch you (can I touch you)
And do the things that lovers do
Ooh, wanna hold you (wanna hold you)
I gotta get it through to you, oooh

    When the going gets tough
    The tough get going
    When the going gets rough
    The tough get rough
    Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey
    Ooooh baby

    I'm gonna buy me a one-way ticket
    Nothin's gonna hold me back
Your love's like a slow train coming (slow train coming)
And I feel it coming down the track (woh)

    Darlin', I'll climb any mountain
    Darlin', I'll do anything
Ooh (ooh) can I touch you (can I touch you)
And do the things that lovers do
Ooh, (ooh) wanna hold you (wanna hold you)
I gotta get it through to you (ooh)
'Cos when the going gets tough
    The tough get going
    When the going gets rough
    The tough get rough

    Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
    Wooh, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah

    Darlin', I'll climb any mountain
    Darlin', I'll swim any sea
Darlin', I'll reach for the heaven
    Darlin', with you lovin' me
    Oooh (oooh)

Oooh, can I touch you (can I touch you)
And do the things that lovers do (can I touch you)
Oooh, wanna hold you (wanna hold you)
I gotta get it through to you

    When the going gets tough
    Going gets tough
    Going gets rough
    Going gets rough...

If there was an old Otis Thorpe highlight tape, that should certainly be the music to it.

Its all about the championships, obviously... if Clyde had won, oh, lets say the 90-92 championships with Portland, his jersey would be retired in Portland rather than in Houston.

I seriously think that Clyde deserved for his number to be retired. he had great numbers, but I understand that his presence is over stated. I do not think he deserves to call just home games and any game at all; he is not a good commentator. Matt Bullard does a better job. thought i might just add that in there.
