watching them last night was amazing. you know that if one star is struggling, the team can pass it to the other star. you know that one can dominate a game at any time. and as yao gets closer and closer to his mvp level, we can begin to expect a lot more from this team.

it hit me when i saw a quote from Fred Kerber's NY post article:
"...like the one-two punch of Tracy McGrady (34 points) and Yao Ming (24 points, 13 rebounds) utterly dominating." we have this crazy combo, and with tmac regaining his form and yao starting to get his mojo back, this could be one hell of a finish to the season.

Regardless of who's #1a or #1b or who runs the offense or who's the focal point of the offense, winning is all that matters. if VG finds a way to properly mesh the talents of our two superstars so that they start winning consistently again, then we should be all for it. let's just all enjoy the ride.

    Great thread.

i hate hyperbole, but are they the best 1-2 punch in all of team sports considering age? Obviously, neither has accomplished anything in their careers but if we're looking at simply starting a team, does anyone else really rank above?

You take them over Nash/Amare and Shaq/Wade based on age. No other duo even comes close, I don't think.

You have Manny and Papi in baseball as one of the greatest duos ever, but 2 out of 9 + pitching can't compare to the impact of 2 guys on a basketball team. Maybe 2 pitchers the caliber of Santana and Liriano are comparable but I don't know if Liriano can stay healthy.

Football, nothing comes close. Too many players for 2 guys to have that big an impact.

I think we're really taking for granted what we have here which is what the trade was supposed to create. With McGrady healthy and Yao having come into his own, we now have two legit MVP candidates in the prime of their careers. How many teams in NBA history have been able to say that? Hell, how many times in an era has there been a team like that? You have great duos, even hall of fame duos like Stockton/Malone, but both guys weren't MVP candidate - Stockton was never going to win an MVP. We have two guys who legitimately could win the MVP over the next 3 years and are essentially just hurting each other back in the vote.

We really need to appreciate this. And my god, where are those of you who were against the Francis trade because trading Kelvin Cato would create a hole at backup center. LOL.

Healthy, they are the best duo in the NBA. If they stay healthy, and they will (I just know it!!! ), we'll be a powerful force in the playoffs, even with Rafer at the point... with no one worth mentioning backing him up that actually is a point guard. Our two dudes can cover up a lot of weaknesses.

If that is game 7 (or game 6, for that matter) of the WC Finals, I can live with that. Been there before, lol. That would be a giant step for this team, making it that far.

looking at that team and this team now only mike james was a guy who could score consistently (sura was great but inconsistent) i think the current rocket team is a bit more balanced in that regard

rafer, luther, shane.juwan, bonzi, kirk and on occasion hayes can consistently get 7-10 points a night.

I like your enthusiasm. I also would like to see more chemistry between them when yao works his way back to MVP level, they did not show much of that last night although individually they both played well.

i am not saying we are not better now..but the unfortunate thing that happens to the rockets is everybody goes cold on the same night.

my point is we need everybody to chip in to beat teams in the reg season and especially the playoffs. realistically we can get atleast 50pts from tmac and yao combined. rest of the team has to be come up with another 40-50.

And so it does not deserve to have a thread? According to your "standard", how many games a thread has to cover?

yeah, i know that the rest of the cast needs to contribute for us to win against the big boys. i was just commenting on how potent our gruesome twosome could be, when everything comes together. i think we all know that we cant win consistently with just two players scoring. i didnt think i had to state the obvious

I prefer Yao to be the low blow and T-Mac the uppercut.

man i'm so happy we have both of them healthy,i said many times before that we will win the championship if both yao and t-mac are healthy.people can say all they want about the defeat against dallas but fact is,it was their first season together, their 1st season together.and now that both are healthy and with better players around them,i'm pretty confident that we will win the ring.people can say that i am a fool but i don't care because i believe,i have faith in yao and t-mac and shane and bonzi and head and rafer and mutumbo and ................

the good thing is, u still dont see that chemistry b/t yao and tmac. but that's b/c both are not playing at their peak level at the same time. u saw some of that chemistry in the dallas series 2 yrs ago but yao wasn't this dominant yet. and really, that was when they both were healthy.

now both are relatively healthy, it's gonna be special. when yao's hot, it causes havoc in the paint and open the outside for our shooters. if tmac's hot, it causes havoc all over the place and gives opportunities to interior players and shooters. when both are hot, well the opponent is screwed.

we just need yao now to get that dominance back w/ 7-8 games to go so he can play playoff ball the last few reg. season games, including those v. jazz.

then bam, both go ballistic in playoffs.
