HarperCollins Announces Publication Of Jenna Bush's Book For Teens

New York, NY (AHN) - HarperCollins announced this week that it is publishing a book written for teens by Jenna Bush, one of President Bush's daughters. The book, titled "Ana's Story: A Journey of Hope," focuses on a teen mother living with HIV in Panama.

Bush, 25, said the book is non-fiction and stems from her job as an upaid intern for UNICEF in Panama, where she has been since September. According to USA Today, she said the book is not political and its purpose is "to put a face on statistics" and get kids "thinking and involved."

Bush is currently teaching at a shelter several days a week.

USA Today quotes her as saying, "I'm aware that not all kids can pick up and fly to Panama. I'm very lucky."

The former public school teacher is planning a book tour in schools, libraries and bookstores.

Editor of HarperCollins Children's Books Kate Jackson said she was impressed by Bush's "intellect, drive and passion."

Bush said in a press release: "I have been inspired by my work with adolescents in Central and South America. These young people have faced extreme hardships and exclusion but are strong in spirit and have an incredible will to succeed.

"Through their stories, it is my hope to motivate young Americans to increase their awareness of other young people around the world: to learn about the challenges they face, how they triumph over adversity, and to become involved in helping them."

The book will include color photographs by Mia Baxter. It is scheduled for publication in fall 2007, and Bush said she will donate the proceeds to UNICEF.

I was originally sceptical of motivation (I hate that my first thoughts are often negative). But the proceeds are going to charity, she does teach a few days a week at a shelter and was a public school teacher --- all things she would not have had to do. I think her intentions are good.
