Hehe....Only reason I wish Elite had a 55"+ 1080p plasma. Then again, it probably would be out of my budget. My parents are going to mostly use it to watch movies and non-HD tv. Think plasma would be better, even if it does not have 1080p? I might end up buying a Bluray player as well.
How are LG flat panels? Are they up their with Elite and Sony or down the line with Panasonic and Samsung?
??? So GM and Ford must be the same too.. In any case, Samsung and LG make great TVs.. Some of the best in the world. Just like their cellphones, the lines that come out over there are far advanced than the LG and Samsung products they sell here. Asia is about two years ahead.
IMO panasonic sucks. Of course I am no expert. I just went to Best Buy and looked at a Panasonic and Sony that were next to each other and the Sony blew the Panasonic outta the water. You are telling me Sony is not actually considered a good brand for tv's?
He was referring to plasmas which Sony no longer makes. Its also a bit difficult to tell how good a picture looks in the store. For instance the factory settings on the Sony XBR LCDs are really jacked up. The brightness, colors and sharpness are turned up way to high. With the right calibration/settings IMO the Sony LCD can look far better than what it will at the store. I really don't know what the second best plasma is but from ones I have seen and from what I have read the Pioneer Elite is kind of in a class of its own.
Panasonic has been making some great flat panels. You can't just walk up to two tv's and just compare them in the store. Store models usually have their calibrations all out of whack and more often than not, they have their color/brightness jacked up to the moon so they will attract attention.
LG flat panels often get good reviews (LG & Zenith are the same company now). LG models often give you really good bang-for-the-buck and in some cases are better tv's than Samsungs or Pioneers. Sonys are always going to be expensive whether they're worth it or not... it's a Sony and that probably adds 30% to the price alone. lol.
i have a sony. they are out of the plasma business. i was just commenting on plasmas only. i WOULD NEVER consider looking at stuff at Best Buy a fair comparision. None of the TVs are calibrated correctly, people keep screwing with the settings, its in the middle of a big store. Go to Home Theater Store to see stuff done properly. for Plasmas Panasonic wins awards from all industries http://www.ultimateavmag.com/flatpaneldisplays/107panath50/ Conclusions The 50-inch plasmas I reviewed as recently as three years ago were rarified products that in some respects performed better than this one– at more than double the price. I feel that Panasonic, an estimable brand, has let its guard down to become a mass-market producer, the dominant player in plasma sales. Still, even with the problems, for the price, $3,300, you will not likely find a better 50-inch plasma display.
Can someone tell me what is the difference between a tv and a monitor? I think I have narrowed it down to this one: http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/pna/v3/pg/product/details/0,,2076_310069731_290043890,00.html But is their anyway to check if Elite will come out with a bigger version of the same thing in a month or two?
I think he is referring to the HD tuner, which that set does not have. Their only use is if you plan to get over the air/broadcast antenna signals from the major networks. That set also does not have speakers since its just a monitor. IMO it looks better without the speakers on the side so long as your Dad has some kind on home theater system. That Elite has one hell of a picture and gives you the sharpness of an LCD with the better colors and black levels of the Elite plasma.
My dad has a pretty good home theater system, so I am not worried about the speakers. For HD, he has DirecTV. Does he still need an internal tuner?
