My dad's birthday is coming up and I want to get him a flat panel tv. It is going to be in a room that will have some outside light coming in. So a plasma might be a problem? I love the Sony, I just wished it was a little bigger (but cheaper then the $35K 70"). How the hell are Fujitsu tv's?
I have a Samsung DLP as well and enjoy it. I don't know anything about the Pioneer, but the Sony plasmas I've seen are outstanding.
we have a 50" 1080i panasonic plasma mounted on the wall. it has good color contrasts and was a reasonable price.
That sounds like a cool tv, I just want one that is 1080p. I saw a Bluray hooked up to a 1080p tv at the Sony store and it blew even HD out of the water. I mean the thing was absolutely AMAZING!
Sharp AQUOS and Toshiba REGZA are good alternatives. I don't really know much about HDTV's in general, so you would have to consult our bbs HDTV guru (tinman). I think the best thing to do is give him an estimate on how much your willing to spend so he can find the best value for your dollar.
The Sony is a LCD (they stopped making plasmas) and the Elite is a Plasma. Do plasmas really last long nowadays?
Either would be a great choices and IMO each represent the best on the market for the respective technologies. I prefer the overall picture quality of the elite but feel the Sony is a better value when you factor in cost. I have the 40" model of that Sony you posted and absolutely enjoy it. Another thing you may want to consider is the Sony XBR2 over the XBR3. The only difference between the two is cosmetic only.
I'm not trying to knock your tv choice, heck I have a 27" Olevia in my bedroom, but Olevia is a good bang-for-the-buck tv, but can't hold a candle to many models made by Hitachi, Pioneer, Samsung, Sony, etc.
See, I wouldn't even think about it if the Elite was a 1080p. But its not. My main criteria for the tv: 1080p (Sony) Big (Elite) Coolness factor (Both) XBR3 looks alot cooler then XBR2 and I might be stupid to do it, but am willing to spend a few extra bucks for it. Any comments on the Samsung? How are Fujitsus?
Pioneer makes a 50" 1080p plasma but its pricey. Incredible picture. I don't really know much about fujitsus. The Samsung 1080p LCDs are very nice and I think are a very close second to the Sony XBR for LCDs. It uses the same panel as the Sony but doesn't have quite the electronics driving it. They are a better value over the other two sets you are looking at but don't really have the coolness factor.
What does this mean? Independent HDMI® Inputs with the ability to accept a 1080p/24Hz signal The Elite claims to be able to do this? How does this differ from normal 1080p? Also, is their anything better then 1080p coming out anytime soon?
There shouldn't be anything better than 1080p for quite a while since the current sources are limited. Good question on how they list the input on that Elite. I really don't know what that means but the set definitely doesn't have the resolution at 1365 x 768 to be 1080p. I would guess that it its just saying it can accept and display the signal.
