March 2nd is Texas Independence Day, the day the Declaration of Independence for the state of Texas was signed in 1836. I'm starting this thread early because I am taking the day off March 2nd and more than likely I will be waaay too inebriated to start a thread. So....Happy Texas Independence day to everyone!!!!
Well, thank goodness we didn't stay independent; we might not of survived. The Republic was bankrupt after the war with Mexico and we had slavery. the U.S. wanted nothing to do with us. Most people don't know we barely made it into the union by two votes.
I don't think this was so much an issue with Texas, as a proxy vote on slavery. Admission of Texas was seen by abolitionists as adding power to the southern pro-slavery camp. I don't think it would have been a close vote if slavery hadn't been such a large political factor.
I think we could have figured it out. Slavery would have come to an end eventually, and without institutionalized racism, it might have worked out pretty well. Then when oil came, Texas would have ruled the country. I'm just glad the rest of his vision didn't come to be. He had a sort of Texas Manifest Destiny where Texas would rule the Southwest. California would have ruined Texas.
I wasn't born here, but I got here before my 2nd b-day. I claim Texas! Every car I've ever driven has had a Texas plate. (neither of these was one of them)
HA HA! Our hardscabble band of land bandits stole Texas from your tinhorn dictator. The whole thing was decided by less people than attend a 2A football game on Friday night. Amazing.
HELL YEAH! I am celebrating Texas Independence Day by planting my veggie garden, having cajun food for lunch with my Dad, getting my hair cut, and having Lebanese food with my girlfriend and some other friends for dinner this evening. Then I get to spend all day (and perhaps all night) tomorrow in the recording studio. Yes I took a vacation day today. For some strange "Fatty Fat b*stard reason" , I always take March 2nd off, even when it's in the middle of the week. What are y'all doing to commemorate March 2nd, Texas Independence Day??
