A very close friend wants to start a small storefront business. She has a great idea, and has a ton of knowledge about all aspects of the type of business she wants to start, but she and I are clueless about a few things when it comes to actually starting a business.

We're mainly interested in two things right now: researching grants that may be available, and preparing a business plan to use for the purpose and getting a loan.

do grants exist for single women looking to start a small business? a quick google search leads me to believe that this may be more of state level thing rather than federal. anyone ever get a grant for a small business or know how i can research this? we live here in houston, by the way.

also, we don't know how to prepare a formal business plan. we can look at websites, but i figured someone on here may know of a great online resource or software. mac software is preferred, though I know that will severely limit our options.

Any help at all would be incredibly appreciated.

There should be a local small business administration (SBA) that should help you out at no costs. They can help to formulate a business plan and will let you know what types of grants are available.

i would definitely use the SBA as a primary resource of info.

They helped me get my street pharmacy off the ground.

Like Nyquil said, start with SBA . If you need Realtor help, I'm your man. Just wanted to throw that in there.

It's my fiance that is starting the business, by the way. We figure she'll have more grant and loan opportunities if she starts this while still single? is that line of reasoning accurate?

If you have good credit, throw your name in it and you'll get a bigger loan at a better rate. If you go ahead and get an SBA loan, get ready to sign lots of documents.

    read Small Business Man

Their advice seems to be: real business is done on paper, business is always personal, and..

You need something to sell. Now, this could be *anything*. Thingamajig...whosi-whatsi...whatchamacalit
