Burning (and I guess converting) an ISO image on a Mac

OK, I have a problem and here is a quick summary:

I have a Pioneer DVD and multi-audio player. Unfortunately it plays but does not properly play the audio for many new DVD-A discs. As a result Pioneer has issued a firmware update but are asses about it and will only do it if you mail th player into their service center for 2-3 weeks (for something that takes about 5 min to do).

However, because we live in the wonderful age of the internet some people were able to make a copy of a disc and upload it. So I downloaded the zip file and then it unzips an iso image. I burned it to a disk (it has to be a cd) but it would not play. So I read that Mac's disk utility does not properly handle ISO images and so you need Toast or Nero or DVDDecrypter or something similar. Most people have PCs and already have that. I don't because I have never needed it.

Does anyone know a free or trial version of something for the Mac that can properly handle ISO images when burning? Again, I can successfully burn the ISO to a disc but something about the software does not transfer it correctly (opened I guess?) so it is useless in the DVD player. I have looked and cannot find anything but many of you are much more techie than I.

    Thanks in advance.

Can't you take the ISO or ZIP file over to a PC and create the CD there? I can't believe other MAC people haven't seen this. Did you search for it on Mac forums or Mac in your favorite search engines? Just trying to help here.

For ISOs on PC, I use a program called Daemon Tools. It's a CD-ROM emulator that loads the ISO image into a virtual drive on your computer. It completely eliminates the need for burning.

I did a quick search, and there's a Mac equivilant called ToastMount that does the same thing.

Good luck- let us know if it works so I can reccomend it to other folks if it ever comes up.

I'm confused...that site says it is for mounting the iso image to my desktop. Why do I need to do that - I just need to properly burn the iso I already have.

I am asking this out of ignorance, by the way...not saying you are wrong.

Swoly - I did searches and saw that there were people on Macs that were having the same problem for the same DVD player but they never posted back in the thread and nobody offered advice. The only people who could do it on a Mac were the ones that owned Toast.

Mounting the image basicly tricks the computer into thinking that you have already put a physical disk in to the drive. It creates a virtual drive that you put (mount) the ISO image into. So there's no burning involved. You just load the software straight from the ISO.

    In other words:

-Real DVD goes into Real DVD player- load the software

    OR

-ISO image goes into (mounts) the virtual DVD player (ToastMount) - load the software

Try it out- it will make more sense once you do it.

But I do have to burn a real cd to put into my DVD player (connected to my TV) for the firmware update.

Well after you mount it, wouldn't your mac think that it's doing a cd copy instead of you trying to burn an ISO, because that's where the disk utility is giving you problems right? Handling isos.

SO after you mount, you do a CD Copy instead of a "burn from image". That should give you a working/playable cd if it's just the Iso handling that's just the problem.

Hmm. Turns out you don't need a special tool to mount or burn ISO images on the Mac. Both can be done with Disk Utility. Here are instructions on how to burn an ISO.

    http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20060619181010389

Instead of telling the program you want to burn an image, then choosing the file, you're supposed to do the reverse: You choose the file, then tell the program you want to burn it. So, to burn an ISO image to disc, here's what to do:

    1. Insert a blank disc.

    2. Start Disk Utility.

    3. From the File menu, choose Open Disk Image and select the ISO to be burned.

    4. In the list of volumes, you will now see an item representing the ISO file. Select it.

    5. Click the Burn button and follow the instructions.

Well I just saw that I have to have Toast to use that, anyway. If I had Toast I would not have this isuue. Argh.

Bejeez - yes, I have done many versions of that. I can burn the iso no problem but apparently it just doesn't translate it correctly or something. I have no idea.

Try Burn, it's a freeware replacement to Toast. One more blank CD is worth a shot.

I wonder what Disk Util isn't doing right... Maybe the CD needs to be bootable, and it is screwing it up. Weird.

No luck. I guess I will try to use my fathers PC to see if I can make a copy. For reference, by the way, here is the thread about the player and DVD audio...on the relevant page.
