They just said on NBA Nation that the deal was set but Rockets change their mind on the trade deadline....I would have done that right away!

The salaries aren't even close to matching, so the trade can't be a straight-up trade. I wonder what the filler was. Maybe the filler was Juwan, which was rumored as well, but I don't think Juwan+Hayes for James is a good deal because then the rockets have nobody to play PF except Shane. Sura + Hayes for James is better... but I still like Hayes's contribution to the team, especially as Yao's frontcourt partner.

I think they stated that Sura was to be the throw-in

However, Rox nixed the trade because they didn't want to trade anyone who had contributed significantly while Yao was down

Even though he is foul prone...the guy plays very good D and sets nice screens as well.

    Hmm..

A guy who hustles.. or a guy who ball hogs..

Think I'd keep Hayes, better for our team.

How about when no-one can hit a shot - maybe James can step up and drain a few of those wide open threes.

I know we're giving up a lot in Chuck Hayes - but I think if it was possible - we should have done it. James can be a real help in the playoffs though. I still think if it was possible we should have done it.

As you can tell everyone thinks we need a PG - so Mike James just might be that PG off the bench. Oh well.

I never really like Mike James anyways. :p I just thought he could have helped.

we have the backup PG position semi decently covered. (with luther head/tmac) If Mike James came thru, wed have it covered thoroughly. However we would be severely short at the four spot...

And I dont think hitting wide open 3's is a problem faced by this team. we do that perfectly fine between tmac, head, and alston...

Deal Hayes and Sura for James, and then a second deal of Lucas for Kleiza? They should've done it.

Yeah, that would have left us with Battier as the only option to backup Juwan

Well that is true that we would lack severely in the four spot - i didn't think of that. I would only do it if somehow we get a four in return. Like making Lucas for Kleiza deal.

Plus we have no idea how James might affect our team chemistry. He could be the cancer of the team.

Hayes for Mike James is bad for a couple of reasons.

    1. We are just taking from one position we are low at to fill another - the two places we are "lacking" talent are PF and PG. We dont need to trade a PF to get a PG.
    2. Mike James is at the tail end of his carreer while Hayes is at the beggining - Mike James is going to be falling and falling as the years go by. You are seeing it right now in Minnisota. He isn't even starting anymore. Shouldn't give up a young fully capable talent for an old vet.
    3. Hayes fills a void, Mike James doesn't - Mike James will give you points, maybe assists. But we have plenty of that. Hayes is a perfect complement to Tmac on the pick and roll, and a solid rebounder and defender. We need that more than we need shooting.
    4. Chemistry/Lockerroom issues- Getting Mike James would ruin the chemistry, flat out. First he was traded, then we didn't want to sign him with his trade kicker. You have to expect chemistry issues.
    5. Cap flexability- If we do nothing we lose much more salary than if we trade for Mike James and his 3 year contract.

Im glad this deal didnt happen.
Chuck has the hustle that most players dont.
He is comfortable being a role player while James is not.
Its apples and oranges, but Chuck wouldve been sadly missed.
You easily forgot how poor our reboundiing used to be.
