I think Babel was better, but i think Pan's Labyrinth was better than all of them so it doesn't really matter anyway. I'm happy for Marty, this is for all of the others that he didn't win, the Oscars version of a make-up call.
the departed was really good...probably wouldnt win if it was going up against past winners, but i saw 3 of the nominated movies and the dpearted was the best of the 3

No that's way too extreme! lol I don't think this was a major travesty, the only real gripe i have with this years oscars is Pan's Labyrinth not winning at least best foreign film, as i think it should have been nominated for best film. Past, unforgivable oscar sins include Pulp Fiction not winning best picture/director, and Ellen Byrsten(sp?) not winning for Requiem for a Dream.
They basically kind of combined the endings from the Infernal Affairs trilogy...they should have just left Damon alive to stir in his own guilt. Would have been better that way.
You are correct. Generic, formulaic, with over the top performances highlighted by multiple Wahlberg freakouts and Nicholson-as-tough-guy scenes. Scorcese deserved an Oscar, just not for this film. As others have said, there was no way Eastwood was going to add to his collection, The Queen was about Mirren's performance rather than the film itself, Babel was too thematically similar to Crash, and Little Miss Sunshine, a decent- and I stress decent- film was indicative of the weakness of this year's field. On an unrelated note, it's always great to see Scorcese wearing those Marcho Grouch glasses, covering up a pair of ungodly, gargantuan eyebrows. Also, Reese Witherspoon has become unbelievably hot.
Leo dying was great...but im all about surpise endings and stuff like that... I never did really like Leonardo Dicaprio until Aviator, Blood Diamond and The Departed...he's quickly becoming one of my favorite actors I wish Peter O'toole won though. He's so old. I think he got one of those Honorary Oscars though Forest Whitkar was really good in the last king of scotland though. He deserved it
Yeah i was kind of hoping Will Smith would take that out, Whitaker was great though, and obviously Will Smiths portrayal was much easier to be moved by so it makes his performance more memorable. I think the film itself (LKOS) didn't go deep enough into Idi Amin (and fair enough, the film isn't about him) but that's why i felt Will Smiths performance was better. By the way, i've actually heard that in real life, Chris Gardener was being paid during his internship, and quite a good sum, too. Anyone else heard about this?
An academy award is a nice way to recognize a good film, but it doesn't always translate into a film being recognized as one of the all-time greats. So, especially the further back you go, many people don't even remember which film won best picture in a given year. I'm just glad that Scorsese was finally recognized. Then again, would it have mattered? Do you all realize that Hitchcock never won an Oscar? Crazy.
Exactly. There is no measure in arts. One only can it likes it subjectively, unlike sports competition. It's a little funny to me that those who won tonight were so emotional. But the movie industry is dog eat dog world, so getting recongintion means a lot.
I agree The Departed seemed very ordinary for a film with that many name actors. I thought Babel should have won it. Also Reese is looking hot. She lost alot of weight and has gotten her self back in shape after having those kids.
The Departed winning best film was underwhelming, though I didnt think Babel was anything special either and I hadn't watched the other films. I guess I was rooting for Clint again. I was really excited to watch "The Departed" when it first came out because I was a huge fan of Infernal Affairs. However while i thought its was entertaining, it didnt meet my expectations. Perhaps that is because since I watched Infernal Affairs so I already knew what was going to happened or perhaps because I thought the movie was better in the original Hong Kong version. Hey atleast Scorsese corrected the academy announcers who said "Departed" was base on a Japanese film lol.
The Departed was pretty good, IMO. I thought the acting was top-notch (with the exception of Martin Sheen's accent), and the plot was decent. I could definitely see it as Best Picture. On the other hand, if Little Miss Sunshine had won, I would have thrown the remote through my TV, Wii-style. Talk about an overrated, craptacular movie. Ugh. I wanted to slit my wrists during the film.
