Guys I would love to have Kenyon Martin
on this ball club but lets get
serious...the guy is gonna be in the top
3 and personally I think he is a lock at
the top spot...the only way we are
getting him is to either trade up to get
him or just beat the odds in the
lottery....I dont know who we will be
getting or who will be available when we
pick but I heard about this kid from
China that is supposed to the real
deal...the only thing is, he is 19 and
still maturing...he is 7'6" and really
    talented...i dunno...he might turn out
to be something...supposed to be one of
the best big men in the world including
NBA players according to a lot of
sources...anyway, what do you all think?

    Sean Bradley
    Minute Bol (spelling?)
    George Muresan

What do these people have in common?

    1) They are all VERY tall.
    2) They are all VERY painful to watch because they cannot play basketball.
    3) They are all in the NBA because they can block shots and rebound without leaving the ground.
    4) None of them have or will ever win a championship.

My theory is that 7'-4" is the maximum height that a non-genetically engineered human can have basketball skills. People in this category include:

    Rik Smits
    Arvydas Sabonis

As you can see 7'-4" is pushing the limits of the human skeletal structure. Both of these guys are hurting beyond their years. I think that 7'-2" is getting in the upper range of athletic possibilities. The centers in the league that are this tall don't seem to have as many chronic injuries as the 7'-4" guys. I think the ideal height for a center is 6'-11 to 7'-1". The guys in the league that are in this range seem to have the best combination of athleticism, basketball skills, and durability.

My answer to your question is that I don't think we should pull a Don Nelson and go after a 7'-6" Chinese player despite what the rumors are because even if he is able to play (hard to believe) he will be suffering from ankle/foot/back problems in the next few years because no one should be that tall. It is a freak of nature, not a basketball player.

    Emoreland,

I will pay you five bucks if Martin is selected in the top three. It simply isn't going to happen. Any team that selects someone like him in the top three is absolutely nuts. Don't get me wrong, he's a tremendous collegiate defensive player, but he simply doesn't have the size to be a tremendous NBA player. Chicago drafted a 6'8 power forward with the first overall pick, but Brand was a polished offensive player along with being a solid defender. Even given that, most people would tell you they made a mistake by picking him. Players who are undersized like that have a limited ceiling. When you throw in the fact that Martin is still raw on the offensive end then picking him with a top three pick just doesn't make sense. He gets by in college because he is bigger and stronger than most college posts. That won't be the case in the NBA. If you look at the power forwards and small forwards who have made an impact immediately are either in the 6'10-7'0 range or have a variety of skills that make them more dangerous than the prototypical player at that position. Don't get me wrong, I think Martin can be a solid NBA player, but he will probably fit in a lot like former Bearcat Danny Fortson (who was picked 10th).

Nobody knows what the Rockets are going to do the rest of the season, nobody no what college prospects are going to do what the rest of the season, nobody knows what is going to be spread on draft day, nobody knows what trades will be made for draft positioning, nobody knows what will happen in the lottery drawing, nobody knows what positions teams ahead of the will be trying to fill and nobody knows the draft order. My point? Nobody has any clue about who will get drafted where. I don't mean to be harsh but you cannot say a player is a lock to be drafted by this team or this position in the draft. It is almost ludicrous to say that he will be drafted to high for them to get. I don't know if I am the only one that noticed but we are having on of those tough luck, injury riddled seasons. It's fun to speculate though.

i think martin will play SF in the nba, he actually has a nice first step, and a decent overall offensive game.

    gr-8,

Well, if Martin is going to play SF in the NBA then he definetely won't be picked in the top three because he hasn't proven that he can hit the long range jumper on a consistent basis. More importantly though, most people like Martin for his rebounding and his interior defense. Playing him at small forward negates that advantage. Plus, is he quick enough to guard NBA 3s?

    barzilla,
i watched him against OU (it was OU, so take it with a grain of salt), and he was by far the best athlete on the court. I dont think he has reggie miller range, but from 10-12 he looked automatic. He had some nice post moves, very long arms, and wasn't as stocky as i thought he would be.
I could definitely see him guarding a SF in the NBA, but i haven't watched him alot either. I think he can be real good though.
