I have to agree with this guy, but I definitely put the blame on the Vegas police department. Now I live in LA, and go to places like the Slauson Swapmeet to pick up cds, the Sunset Strip, Crenshaw blvd. etc and don't feel threatened with people walking with bandanas, tattoos, and shaved hands standing next to me. But the Vegas police department was a downright joke this weekend. In on instance, we had to wait 5 minutes at a green light b/c people were crossing the street on and not giving a damn about the fact that the light was red for them. And to make things worst, there were 4 cops at the corner of the intersection outside of their cars, and just watched like nothing was going on. And a car making a right turn almost hit two guys (not his fault by the way b/c he had a green light) b/c the just decided to not care about the law and cross the street whenever they felt like it. All this happened within 5 feet of 4 cops who just ingored everything. The only instance a cop did anything was when me and my friends were standing on the sidewalk trying to discuss where to gamble, and a cop walked over and told us to move further back b/c we were in the way of people. That was the biggest joke! Its one night to let some minor things go by, but when the hotel elevator smells like weed, the hotel parking lot smells like weed, people are about to get hit by cars, and the cops just stand by and act blind, thats just dropping the ball!
I don't know if anyone caught this last night on NBA Coast-to-Coast, but there was a very interesting and confrontational debate between Greg Anthony (UNLV graduate, "unofficial mayor of Las Vegas" as Bucher kept calling him) and Ric Bucher. Basically, Ric was making a point about how he felt Vegas did not put on a good exhibition for the league in terms of its readiness for the NBA. He kept citing a "lack of organization" and how the city looked overwhelmed by the AS Game and all the traffic. He also cited security issues. Greg took exception and started getting more and more upset with Bucher's assertions, then in a completely awkward and arseholish tone basically told Bucher to shut up, cutting him off at the end and telling him, "I don't wanna hear another word out of your mouth"...then proceeded to put on a fake smile -- after an awkward silence by all sides -- and say, "just kidding". Suffice it to say he wasn't joking and Bucher was NOT amused to say the least...he had a serious frown on his face struggling to keep his composure. From that point on, they just kept showing highlights and provided their usual commentary/analysis. It was completely uncalled for on Greg Anthony's part, but he clearly was defensive about his hometown. As it turns out, Bucher was right...I just didn't know what he was referring to until now.
Yup......just ask any cop who works here. Heck there is this type of stuff going on now due to all the gangsters who moved here from New Orleans. My friend was telling me about a guy who got into a scuffle in a River Oaks bar with a bunch of thug brotha's. Got jumped in the parking lot (5 on 1) and gave him a pretty good beat down. Its just not reported by the media, they are to busy hating on the USA and GW Bush. The cops won't arrest them unless it is a major crime because the jails are to full and they don't have any money to pay the fines if they did. Not to mention I am pretty sure this is not something the city wants widely exposed.
I wonder which cities would actually TURN DOWN a chance for the all star game. We might reach that point soon enough.
The only time I've been to vegas was during spring break on the west coast in 04. I wasn't there for spring break, but it was also the first week of the ncaa tournament, so long story short it was a huge weekend for them. It was very orderly imo. like I wrote in an earlier post, houston had no problems just last year.
I'm surprised Vegas known for big events couldn't handle the ASG...the NBA has to be very happy cause now they can tell the Maloofs to STFU about having a team in Vegas. I wish I could have been there. Sounds like an awesome time on the strip and no one got shot.
If I read the article right, the NBA Players did NOT get into any shootings or crimes. Sounds like a white guy pissing on minorities to me. There has been an increase in every city that has hosted any major event, like the Olympics or Superbowl. It's only news when the players are mostly minorities.(edit)
Let's have the All-Star game overseas then......... <object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/833SjpDcZB0"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/833SjpDcZB0" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350"></embed></object>
Yeah, he's a black guy pissing on minorities. However, you can bet that if there was a black player that got into trouble during all star weekend and got lots of bad press, Jason Whitlock and Michael Wilbon would be the first journalists spouting racism by the sports media...
Was this your first trip to Las Vegas? I've been to Vegas six times in my life and these problems with people jaywalking have existed every time I've been in Vegas. And it's usually not just once or twice I see stuff like this happen, I see it at every stop light on every stroll I take down the strip.
you would be wrong. jason whitlock plays both sides of the fence quite often. depending on how he feels that day I guess. he has had numerous articles critical of black players when other black writers would defend them. just like he wrote this article
Didn't the world Cup have a Hooker Village built ouside of it? I remember jim rome harping on it alot these things happen at big events sounds like Lack of organization and enforcement Rocket River
