I had 610am on this morning and heard some sound bites from the post game inteviews. One of them was T-Mac basically commenting on how he wanted his team mates to attack the Mavs when they were doubling on him. He said that they didn't and couldn't understand why. He sounded a little pissed off in his tone. Anybody else catch this? I was at the game last night and equally peturbed with the inability of the rest of the team to get off a quality shot in the final minutes. They knew that T-Mac was going to be doubled and were unable to react accordingly. What a let down!
i would be pissed off if was him too, but he still should of made more of his free throws along with the rest of the team. 20 of 31 is unacceptable
If you were at the game, you saw how pissed off he was...especially the last possession when he was wide open. But then again...Luther was attacking the basket..?
While our FT shooting sucked, the Mavs was worse : 15-24. It's not like they weren't giving us a shot to win.
Good. He is showing some leadership. He has a right to be pissed off and hopefully it will pay off...
"It's pretty simple," McGrady said. "Once I get on a roll, they're going to take the ball out of my hand or they're going to deny me the ball. They're going to send two guys at me and make somebody else make plays. And once again, we didn't know what to do. We were hesitant, and we just didn't know what to do. "Attack. Be aggressive. You got two guys guarding me. That leaves four guys on three. Attack them. We don't do that." http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/sports/4558461.html
Yeah, he was attacking the basket with absolutely no idea of what he was going to do once he got there. If he were to go straight to the bucket and challenge with confidence then that's different, and I don't think T-Mac can complain. But when you half ass go in there looking to pass after you've jumped in the air, and then are forced to take an off balance runner, that's just BAD decision making. Our guards can hit some big 3's from time to time, but they have NO guts in the paint.
Going towards the basket is not attaacking the basket, luther shot a ft distance jumper on that last shot, darn near went in. attacking the basket is getting a shot 5 feet in much like how luther did against the kings in OT. you could tell tmac wanted this game the way he played, he dove hard on the ground for a loose ball, he did all he could and he should have had the ball at the end of the game even if tmac turned the ball over he should have had the ball that sort of intensity is something i want, actually i NEED to see tmac show for this team to make at the next level. its good, losing games are never good but you damn well know that if the rockets somehow play the mavs this year in the playoffs tmac is going to make sure his team doesnt lose. this will be a continuous problem against decent/good defensive teams until yao gets back. teams will double team tmac without the ball (mavs did that last night and it look like one guy was also sagging) daring the other guy to beat them. with yao even if they double tmac it'll leave yao with single coverage which is 2 points nearly every time. the team will still do well, they've shown that they can beat the teams they are supposed to beat but struggle against the elites, which is expected, which makes yao's return all the more important
Sadly, Snyder is our only player outside of T-Mac that attacks the basket well. Rafer doesn't finish good, Bonzi is too slow to beat anyone off the dribble and Head is more of a shooter than slasher. This is why we need STEVE FRANCIS back. He attacks the basket and can finish strong. Imagine him coming off the bench for us, nobody would be messing with us.
yeah snyder needs to be in the game whenever teams start trapping tmac like that. i can't blame luther and rafer for not attacking too much because they are so small that they are rendered pretty ineffective in the paint anyway. snyder and maybe bonzi are the only players outside of tmac who can attack the rim and have any success. again, don't know why jvg didn't think of that or have his team prepared for that, since any coach with half a brain is going to do his best to deny t-mac the ball. it shouldn't have been that shocking to see double teams sent to t-mac, since teams do the same thing against kobe and i'm pretty sure they've done it to t-mac before.
You can't blame him for being a little disappointed in his teammates (especially Luther). Aside from his FT shooting, it was another case of a great player in T-Mac doing EVERYTHING possible for his team to win yet it didn't happen. He was hitting big shots, making smart decisions, rebounding well and playing great defense. He even got in his "F*** you Dirk. You're not going to score on me" 2004 Playoffs mindset where he guards Dirk so well all the little creampuff will do is pass. We went 2/3 key 4th-quarter possessions without T-Mac even touching the ball. Granted, Dallas was playing good defense on him and denying him the ball we still had enough time on the shot clock for him to run around or have somebody set a pick to free him up. 2/3 key possessions without your hands-down best player touching the ball is a recipe for disaster. I can't fault Luther on the play where he drived and took the high percentage jump shot. He took a smart shot, it didn't go in -- it happens. The T-Mac drive/triple team/kickout to Luther is a different story. If you're not going to absolutely DRAIN a wide open shot like that the least you can do is drive and attack.
rox looked absolutely clueless against the zone. whose fault was that? shouldn't the team be prepared for ANYTHING? This was VG's job to prepare for this and everything else. it's fine that tmac is going to save you, and on just about every night he will, but you need plan b, c, d, e, f, g. and also to strategize, if this happens then what next? for the ones who say vg is the most well prepared, he dropped the ball last night.
agree about snyder completely. we brought him in to be like our version of josh howard, the atleticism which was missing from our team but yet we fail to use him and instead we throw our three point shooters to attack the basket in the final minutes. steve would be great to drive to the hoop............but we been down this road before, if it was at the end of the game steve would jack up a three anyways so it wouldnt matter if we had him or not..........
Just to throw this out there and clear up Dallas giving us a chance on the line....the guys we sent to the line are expected to make their freebies...i can remember at least 6 attmepts from dallas being by dampier and diop, if they hit half, avery would be ecstatic. They're poor shooting was more attributed to who was shooting rather than the rox which was simply a poor performance. Also DD and other Snyder lovers or should I just call you "anybody JVG doesn't play" lovers...its hard to attack the rim when the d lays 5 ft off you begging you to shoot the deep ball. Bonzi needs to be on the court...plain and simple...he is the without a doubt one of the 5 best players on the rockets team. If you want Snyder on the court start lobbying against Head or Alston, Bonzi's minutes aren't going anywhere.
I can understand the criticism T-mac handed his teammates...they deserved it after last night. It should of been done a long time ago IMO. But damn that was still an exciting game wasnt it? I was jumping all over the place yelling and praising! This game oozed playoff intensity! To bad we lost though, we'll get those guys later in the REAL playoffs, if we make it past the 1st round.
the moment we put the mavs in the penalty, jvg should have thrown snyder in there and he would've been like a kid in a candy store getting to the line. jvg has been doing a great job but he doesn't capitalize on mismatches or opportunities that give us an advantage. he sticks to the plan, for better or worse, and believes that it is capable of winning any given night as long as the execution is good enough. and he's right, the only problem is that executing to perfection is difficult, and what are you gona do when the players aren't up to the task? i think it's admirable to want to win your way by building a solid, consistent identity, with a familiar roster. but sometimes, you just gota take wins any way you can. contrast with avery, who filters players in and out until something clicks. i think avery also has a gameplan that he'd like to stick to, but he is much more flexible and willing to mess with the rotation if things aren't working. granted, his roster outside of their big 2 is more talented than ours, but jvg could learn a few things from avery about adapting to the game at hand. there is no way the mavs would have as much trouble as the rockets did getting the ball to their superstar 3, 4 possessions in a row.
Watch closely...in the 2nd qtr when the Mavs went to zone the rockets burned them right away with a brilliantly set up play to get battier a 6 footer from the middle of the paint. The Mavs went to the zone after the rockets had called their last TO if i remember correctly, its all on the players for not executing the plays they have in place for a zone from there out. These guys aren't 1st graders, JVG doesn't have to drawn them up a new picture everytime he wants to run the plays he has in place against a zone.
I seem to recall Bonzi burn Howard off the dribble and convert with the foul, he can beat players off the dribble. I am not saying Bonzi had a great game attacking the basket but he normally attacks it as effectively as anyone on our team.
