As the only supporting fan of the Houston Rockets who waited two hours in the boiling sun outside of the JVG media welcoming. I have always been a supporter of our coach. Being a supporter, however, has not prevented me from pointing out his shortcomings and limitations. I am thankful that JVG has managed to keep our team afloat this season and after the return of Yao Ming he will do even better with all the great talent he has. My benchmark for a truly successful 06/07 coaching season is 60 wins and getting into the WC final. They can do it!!
    Go JVG!! Go Rockets!!

Why would that shut people out? Of course tmac is going to say jvg is the best coach ever. No matter how bad a game tmac has, JVG never criticizes him ever, but instead always says I believe in Tmac's greatness. Of course you would love a coach who has never criticized you even once and always only praises you. JVG still should not be renewed unless this team wins a championship this year.

In other words, only one coach would get a job after one season. Brilliant idea.

I thought you guys were all criticizing JVG's negativeness all the time? Now he's all positive?

LOL. Yeah, JVG is not critical enough. Right.

Also, you do realize that T-Mac has been playing at an MVP-caliber level, right? Its not like he's been stinking up the gym every night.

No, but I'm talking about when tmac was playing like crap in november. JVG will criticize anyone, even yao, but when it comes to tmac, he always says the I believe in his greatness line. Tmac is the only player on this team free of criticism from JVG. Who wouldn't love a coach like that?!

It is his best chance of keeping his job, you know it.

Even with that, Tmac has had some really crappy coaches so again this isnt a real comparison.

Exactly, which is why a vote of confidence from tmac isn't a big deal to me. It's like me using a vspan quote on jvg to argue my point.

    WE better extend Van Gundy....

if you don't know how bad Rafer, Juwan, Deke, Shane would look over at Dallas starting with Dirk,, or over in Phoenix starting with Nash,, or in San Antonio starting with Duncan.....

Sticking TMac with this group and winning 33 games is great coaching.

    Just wait till Yao returns-

Van Gundy says he is more concerned with how his team is playing than the fact he does not have a contract guarantee beyond this season

well duh.....you win you get a new contract.......so if they keep winning what is there to worry about :p

No doubt JVG will stay in Houston after this season, period.

The question is how long the extension will be. If Rox does well in playoffs, then it could be a 3-4 years' deal. If Rox gets kicked out in the playoffs again, then they probably just guarantee him next year. It is pretty simple and predictable.

Anyway, JVG will stay. JVG lovers are very happy. Me? I am cool with it.

    1. Yao is the best center in the league, not the best player.

    2. Rox are doing better, at least record wise, without Yao.

Jeff Van Gundy will be brought back as Head Coach no question in my mind. He is 163-134 as Rockets coach. He is 1 win away from tieing Don Chaney on the Rockets alltime coaching list. We will definetly get past round 1 this year. Mark my words. Go Rockets!!!

You are pulling assumptions out of your ass and implying correlation where none exists. Why would lack of criticism automatically equal affinity? For example, my last boss did nothing but praise me privately and publicly (because I was good at what I did), yet I thought he was a moron and a terrible manager.

Yes that is absolutely the correct answer. What I find more amazing is very few on this board see that. For every bit of JVG's ability to coach, he is even more talented as a coniving, manipulator. He decided the day the Rockets obtained Tmac that's were he would hang his coat. And all other players would be fodder. Although I have been known to call Van Gundy, Van Dummy, He truly is not stupid. He knows that more than anything players get coaches fired and TCenter was TMac's House. You would see him scream at everyone on the bench outside of Tmac. Yes even Yao and sometimes especially Yao. With Tmac starting the season off slow and Yao putting up MVP kind of numbers he has also jumped on the Yao bandwagon some. BUt Tmac is still his main boy. It's no big deal. Tmac needs less coaching than most and perhaps he deserves special treatment but so does Yao.

    This post is 100% correct...

    :D

Also, if you read between the lines in Van Gundy speak when he says that both he and Les have a decision to make at the end of the year, he is basically firing a warning shot across the bow of the Rockets Org...that he won't come cheap and he may entertain other offers.

But, JVG would not dare to go anywhere, he has a contending team, the best talent he has EVER coached and he will hang around until Yao and Tmac fall apart if he can.

The only other thing that might happen is JVG gets tired of coaching and goes back to broadcasting, but there is no way in Hades he takes another job, he already bailed on one team with crappy talent, now that he has talent he will want to maximize it.

And, I am at peace with that.

    DD

You are doing the same by implying that there is a correlation between the sports world and the corporate world when there is none. JVG may be the "boss" per se, but star players always hold more power than the coaches and the coach is always the one to get fired and not the player. Also, you are using the classic case of stating what holds true for an experience you had, most be true of everyone.

So now its a bad thing that he understands how to deal with each player...

No, I'm merely disproving what you said by illustrating a counter-example (that happens to be personal). Answer me this: Do you like to have your ego stroked? If so, do you always like the person who's stroking your ego?

And BTW, my last job was in sports... in the corporate world. :)
