I think BR will win out, but its too early to declare a winnner...Although, a truer indicator will be Departed and Babel, both of which I'll pick up...in Blu-Ray that is...

I wish Batman Begins was in BR format...

I think Warner wants to release Batman Begins on Blu-ray (as well as other movies), but they're waiting for BD-J to offer the same (or similar) functionality that the HDi/iHD interactive format provided for their HD DVD releases. Right now, the tech involved with HD DVD allows for much better interactivity, and it isn't possible to get the same from Blu-ray.

I think an update to BD-J is scheduled for the summer (one that should offer the necessary functionality), so I suppose that might be around the earliest we can expect a release to happen (assuming this is the only thing holding back these movies from being released on BR).

Neither format will "win". Downloads will kill both . . . 10 years from now, DVDs, Blu-Ray, HD-DVD, etc. will be a memory, IMO.

Sony is the maker/backer of Blu-Ray. What company is the maker/backer of HD-DVD?

Toshiba is the main backer of HD-DVD. Microsoft and Universal are the other major supporters of the format.

    I haven't been following this debate closely so I apologize for the newbie questions;

Does Blu-Ray and HDDVD play on different players?
Can they be played on current DVD players and/or computers?
What are the principle qualitative differences between the two?
Do movies on them cost the same?

For now, yes. LG plans to release a dual-format player later this year, although from the specs, it's not looking like a particularly good machine for HD-DVDs. Plus it's gonna list for a whopping $1199.

No. Regular DVD players and DVD-Rom drives will not play HD discs.

The big difference is storage capacity. HD-DVD can do up to 30 GB on a dual layer disc. Blu-ray's dual layer discs hold 50 GB. Reportedly, Blu-ray offers better copyright protection, but I don't see that being a long-term advantage.

If it's a Warner Bros or Paramount release on both formats, then yes the cost is the same. The lone exception is a combo disc on HD-DVD that holds a regular DVD version on the flipside. The Departed is the most recent example. It retails for $34.99 on Blu-ray and $39.99 on HD-DVD/DVD combo.

As far as the other studios, it generally breaks down like this:

    Blu-ray Studios:

Fox/MGM - Everything lists for $39.95. Most titles are bare bones.
Sony - New titles tend to list for $38.95. Catalog titles are $28.95. Most titles have at least some extras.
Lion's Gate - New titles tend to list for $39.95. Catalog titles are $29.95. Newer titles have more extras than older ones.
Buena Vista - Everything lists for $34.95. Most titles have the same extras as the regular DVD.

    HD-DVD Studios:

Universal - New titles are always combos and tend to list for $39.99. Same extras as the regular DVD. Catalog titles list for $29.99 except for the occasional combo which is $34.99. Same extras as the regular DVD.
Weinstein Co. - All titles are $29.95. Same extras as the regular DVD.

AFAIK, I don't even think any of the movies even support it, so the copyright protection for Blu-ray is basically the same as HD DVD. If (or should I say when?) piracy becomes a big issue, I suppose they could implement it in future releases, but as you said, it probably won't really be that much of a factor. Not that this would stop the BDA from trying to convince movie studios to go Blu-ray only, or something like that.
