The Speech by MArcus Oreilius in Gladiator comes to mind "Comodus is not a moral man . . . he should not rule. . he CANNOT RULE!!" That is the way I feel about the Republicans. I am liking Obama but I have you same concerns Rocket River
What's ridiculous is how people harp on the fact that he's black. Take that out of the equation and people wouldn't have so many doubts about his experience and ablity to lead the country. Sometimes this country is so pathetic. Because obviously Wanye Palmer is a real person, and even if he was real there's no way in hell America would elect two black presidents in less than 100 years. That said, He is an awful president but David Palmer was pretty good.
GWB was a cokehead alcoholic that ran every business that got handed to him on a silver platter into the ground. That's a fact. Bill Clinton was a scandal-ridden pothead w**** governor of a state that was last in everything. That's a fact. Ronald Reagan was a crazy mother****er whose only claim to the White House was that he'd acted in some movies. That's a fact. Richard Nixon was a washed up as anyone two-time loser who made a speech before he won saying you won't have Dick Nixon to kick around anymore. That's a fact. And that's leaving out all the worse stuff that got said about those guys, much of which was true too. The truly negative stuff we've heard about Obama so far has only been innuendo and even the innuendo has been tamer than the true things we know for a fact about those other people that got elected. You could apply your worries to every single candidate for president in 2008. In fact, you could apply them to every candidate in any cycle in any year. The only question is how the candidate will respond to the new Rove-ian politics. If he or she will stand up instead of running away like Kerry did he or she will be fine. If not, they will lose. And if they're not ready to stand up to such soggy **** they deserve to. You can make this stuff up about anyone. I'm disappointed in you DaDakota. Do you really believe that Obama's estranged father's religion should have an impact on the race? That's the simplest, easiest crap that will get thrown from the very, very lamest segment of the opposition (see: Jorge). And it will be easy as hell to deflect, since it's entirely irrelevant and since Obama's not a total p***y. That's leaving out how offensive it is to try to smear someone with his father's religion and, more, especially now when we're trying to get right with the Middle East, how offensive it is to think of a Muslim background as a slur. The thing about Obama is that's all they've got on him (as far as we know). Just how he's alternately too black or not black enough, how his dad whom he never even knew was Muslim. And, um, the fact that he smokes. If that's what they're hitting him with, count him as a winner. And shame on your for buying the lame ass hype of Jorge and his like. Do you think that people like that couldn't come up with worse crap about Hillary? Edwards? Richardson? Gore? McCain? Giuliani? Any other Dem or GOP candidate? The knocks on Obama are the lamest knocks in the whole field of real contenders. Even your weird conspiracy theory about V-Span's unhappiness being responsible for JVG not having a contract extension makes more sense than Obama having serious history problems. Wake up.
You can be dissappointed all you like Batman, but the truth is that a good portion of this country is still dealing with racism. The problem with the democrats is that they keep forgetting that fact, just because a good portion of us are enlightened and don't care about race or religion does not mean that the rest of the country feels the same. The way to win the white house is with a southern democrat, someone the SOUTH can get behind, the only exception to this has been JFK, and there are still some remaining questions as to his validity in winning the 1960 elections. What I am saying.....NOT BELIEVING.....SAYING !!!!! Is that there are still a lot of racist pigs in this world, and no matter how much you or I want to believe that Obama is the best candidate, a good portion of the country won't hear a word he says because they will be looking at him and only see his skin color, or hear his name and that will be enough to have them vote the other way. I would vote for him in a heartbeat.....but I guarantee you that a lot of bigotted people would not.... It is the exact same reasons that Hilary could not win.....same thing.....but hers is an issue of sex. I can promise you one thing, the Republicans are hoping like hades that Obama is the candidate, they know that gives them a significant leg up. But go ahead, and bury your head in the sand, let's not talk about the elephant in the room......... DD
Obama looks like the dad from Bill Cosby's Fatherhood. Bill Richardson looks a little like Fred Flintstone.
The wife and I have been going round and round about this all weekend. Her point of view is the same as yours DaDa. Unfortunately we'll always have the TJs of the world. But I believe America is better than that.
And Abraham Lincoln was a few times loser who suffered from chronic depression and had little national experience. So you're right all presidents have had faults. I don't think Dada is holding Obama's race or religious background against him just pointing out that even in America of the 21st C. there still are a lot of bigots out there.
I would have no trouble voting for Hillary, Obama or Rudy. However, I think DD is correct that this country has too many people who will only look at people skin deep, but if you never try, how will the situation ever improve? Maybe not this time, but I am sure eventaully there will be minority president and woman president in this country.
Maybe they should only look at his white half then. I mean he was raised in a white household w/ a white mother and step-father.
Obama will lead in many public opinion polls because ppl will be afraid to say what's really underneath their exterior. When they're in the election booth, they will go with the person who looks more like them. Sad truth, but it's human nature.
Which at this point in our countries history we can not afford. We need to moderate the right handed swing that the country has had for the last 10+ years and go back to the middle. DD
That may be true of many black candidates. But in Illinois Obama broke through that trend, and won over many voters who might have otherwise wouldn't have voted for a Democrat, or a black candidate. It is a particular gift he has. Either way I hope we get a chance to test out all these theories.
Obama is by far the best speaker currently running for president on either side. His experience is limited but let us not forget that GW had never even had any job till he was 40 years old. I would also like Gore to run but I don't see that happening now.
http://www.barackobama.com/2007/02/...ack_obam_11.php Okay. I read the speech. I read the book. Here is my concern: Obama is giving us all pablum all the time. Neither his book nor his speech gave us any inkling of how he would go about "changing" America. He gives us no meat -- no serious roadmap of how to get to achieve utopia. Sorry, I need more substance and less fluff.
Ask and ye shall receive! Senator Obama has been able to develop innovative approaches to challenge the status quo and get results. Americans are tired of divisive ideological politics, which is why Senator Obama has reached out to Republicans to find areas of common ground. He has tried to break partisan logjams and take on seemingly intractable problems. During his tenure in Washington and in the Illinois State Senate, Barack Obama has accumulated a record of bipartisan success. http://origin.barackobama.com/issues/ Strengthening America Overseas http://www.barackobama.com/issues/strengtheningamerica/ Plan to End the Iraq War http://www.barackobama.com/issues/iraq/ Cleaning Up Washington's Culture of Corruption http://www.barackobama.com/issues/corruption/ Meeting America's Energy Needs http://www.barackobama.com/issues/energy/ Honoring Our Veterans http://www.barackobama.com/issues/veterans/ Improving Our Schools http://www.barackobama.com/issues/education/ Creating a Healthcare System that Works http://www.barackobama.com/issues/healthcare/ Protecting Our Homeland http://www.barackobama.com/issues/homeland/ Strengthening Families and Communities http://www.barackobama.com/issues/family/ Protecting the Right to Vote http://www.barackobama.com/issues/votingrights/ Reconciling Faith and Politics http://www.barackobama.com/issues/faith/
