Yesterday evening I was in my workshop and had to get a couple of things down from the loft. I grabbed the closest ladder which was a 12 footer. It was the height I needed and that's all I thought mattered at the time. :(

I leaned the ladder up against the loft and climbed up. I was standing on maybe the 8th step and reached over when the ladder started to slide. Everything else happened so fast and I don't remember the ending.

But what I do remember happening is, when the ladder started to slide I slipped off the step falling between the two steps. I hit a table beneath me with my legs still in between the steps and my body falling back on the ladder. After that I'm not sure what happened. When I hit the table and fell back on the ladder I think it knocked me out for a few seconds.

When I came to I was on the floor with my legs pretty much weaved in the ladder with a table and scroll saw (it was on the table) on top of my legs. I thought both my legs were broken. There was blood showing through my jeans and that plus the pain was scaring the crap out of me.

I laid there for about 10 minutes yelling for help until a car driving by heard me. They stopped, backed up and came over to help me. They, complete strangers, picked me up and drove me to the emergency room about 10 miles away. I couldn't thank them enough.

Anyway I had no broken bones just a nasty gash on both legs just below the knee running down to the ankles.

Here is a little graphic of what I think happened.

An artistic talent of your magnitude is truly rare and special. Monet, Picasso, Kandinsky...

    and Blatz

I guess what they say is true. Great art does come from great suffering.

That's what I thought happened. I saw the blood, felt the pain and knew I just had a bad fall. I was so scared I couldn't move because I thought I was going to make it all worse.

My dad did the same thing back when I was in highschool. He now has a metal plate in his ankle.

    I'm glad you're generally okay.

    That little comic is awesome!

I'm glad you're ok. Falling off a ladder is scary as hell.

    Thanks

The evening I fell sucked, obviously, but the next day I felt fine. I was sore and in a little bit of pain but for some reason I didn't feel as bad as I did today.

When I woke up this morning I could barely get out of bed. I was so stiff that every step I tried to take was a new chapter in pain.

As I type this I feel much better. Still a little sore mainly from the swelling and the bruises but nothing like earlier or the Friday night.

If anyone is going to use a ladder in an area where a lot of wood has been cut, make sure to use an A frame because I think the sawdust is what made the ladder slip out from under me.

The more I think about it the more I think how lucky I was there was a table there to break my fall.
