I'm wondering about all these supposed "untouchables." You all know that the Rox are losing right? Changes must be made....trust the GM....be glad you don't have an owner like Sterling.

Yes, be glad you are not the Clippers.

I would love to have Van Horn - but I don't want his contract (6 YR/73 M). That is a ton of cash for a guy who will be a second or third option.
He does have a nice game and he is young, but that contract makes the deal a tough one to do.

VAN HORN - Kukoc Upgrade . . aka KuKoc 2.0
    better Defensively
Same offensively. [Different offense mind you . . Kukoc is Pure touch]
Not a Bad PF . .. I'd Probably give him some minutes at SF. On our side of the NBA a Scoring PF is a Powerful Peice. It is one of the spots the Lakers are Vunerable. I'd like to make Rasheed, Grant and McDyess HAVE TO play defense. not ROAMING for blocks and sh*t.

MOBLEY - great Find. If so many teams are hot for him . .. If we Trade him . . .I say we RAPE AND PILLAGE some team. 1st rounds Draft Picks and someone. . . . I say a Real nice one sided deal heheheheheheheh . .. otherwise. I'd risk his Upside over some other Hopeful [Fool me once. . . . .if you don't get it. . . See Walt [Mr.Upside!] ]

just thought of one more thing:

If indeed there is *any* merit at all to the Net's shopping Van Horn, you would have to agree the rumor would be found at Utah bbs's as well.

Anyone volunteer to go into the Utah BBS's to see if the Jazz fans are discusses getting Van Horn back home? If they aren't, then I really doubt there is any merit to the Nets shopping him around.

    Allan Iverson
    Sam Cassel
    Tim Hardaway
    Jason Williams
    Stephon Marbury

Personally, I've never see JWill break anyone down 1 on 1. The only time I've seen him drive is on the fastbreak where he really kicks ass, and coming off of picks. Francis and Mobley are definately better penetrators than JWill. And Francis is better than nearly all the people you mentioned up there. Cassel and Hardaway are old, not to mention Hardaway's injured. Iverson has to resort to tough floaters cause he can't get up there to dunk it on duncan like Francis can. The only one I think could be better is my boy Stephon Marbury.

So then if they are both in that leauge top 2. Then why the heck are the names of Ray Allan, Marbury all of them higher. I'd personally take Cassel over Mobley any day of the week when it comes to breaking people down. This is guy is an all-star caliber point guard while Mobley is someone who we continuall tell ourselves could be very good.

You tell me when Mobley makes the all-star game or gathers some serious league recognition.

First off, I thought the trade proposals that started the thread was a joke. But if any of those proposals were legitimate, I pull the trigger in a heartbeat. Van Horn is getting everything he deserves with his contract. He is in his 3rd year and he's already a stud. He is younger than Mobley. Whereas Van Horn just turned 24, Mobley just turned 25 a few months ago. Van Horn is also a much more accomplished player at this stage of his career.

I think ya'll are seriously overestimating the value of Cuttino Mobley. Yes, he is a good player at this point. Will he ever be a star in this league? In all likelihood, no! He is good enough to play a substantial role on a championship team. But he will never lead a championship team. He's just not that good. At best, he might develop into a 19 to 20 ppg scorer, who plays solid D. But that's just about it. He has one good position in which he plays, which is the shooting guard. He will always be a defensive liability against the taller, postup SG's. Allan Houston pretty much toyed with Mobley in the post in the NY game. And there's quite a few more SG's with better post up games than Houston.
Van Horn on the other hand has already proven he's a legitimate 20 ppg scorer. As he gets older, that average will probably peak closer to 28. He does it all right now on the offensive end. Can hit the 3, hit the medium range J, dribble penetration, post up, slash, etc. he's a lifetime 32% 3 point shooter with over 300 attempts. His touch has been as good as it was in college, but expect that average to get closer to the 40's which it is this year. Career 85% free throw shooter. But don't just think of Van Horn as a typical white forward who can stroke it from the outside. This man has Outstanding athleticism. Once had a measured vertical leap of 40 inches. Has a solid post up game right now. Has good footwork and balance. Probably could add some more strength to his game. Shoots a rather low percentage right now. Relies more on his perimeter game and quickness to score than his low post game right now. But I expect him to improve in the FG% department over time. If not, he can be the Clyde Drexler of PF's. Hits the boards at a solid 7.6 rpg clip(averaging 8.4 rpg last year). Averaged a block a game last year with 1 spg. His defense has surprising been very average since he's been to the NBA. He can play both forward positions with the PF being his preference. He's already a star at the age of 24. Lead his team to the playoffs his first year in the league. He's good, REAL good. We are talking about Franchise player type material. But, I'm sorry, no way this deal will EVER go down. Think of Van Horn as a more perimeter oriented Shareef Abdur-Rahim with slightly more athleticism.

And regards to his contract, he's getting paid what he deserves. If you are worried about him tying up cap space, who cares. If you already have a stud in the back court, you need to spend to get a stud in the front court. I consider Van Horn a stud. But we're not getting him. I consider it a pipe dream in the same vain of getting Ray Allen this past off season.

Just my two cents -- but wanted to tell DaMan I always enjoy his comments and insight -- especially on college talent.

I wholeheartedly agree that if Van Horn was a possibility (which I highly doubt) that giving up Mobley shouldn't make people step back on it.

    DaMan,

Saying a player doesn't deserve the league maximum is not quite saying he's overrated. I'll defer judgement on his skills to you; I don't get to see him much, and don't rate players by stats alone. (I'll throw out one stat, 43% FG last year has to be one of the lowest for any good PF.)

Personally, I've got a problem with someone coming off a rookie scale contract with no playoff experience and showing little ability to improve his team winning percentage and then getting the league maximum of $9 million/yr. That's not what I call franchise player performance, yet.

That's why we have this new CBA and had the lock out to begin with. I can't agree with you that he's being paid what he deserves. Call me a miser, but I think league max salaries should go to franchise players. He's being paid what his agent was able to get the Nets to fork over for fear of losing him. If that's what he deserves, then we disagree on semantics.

I don't think anyone mentioned this, but one of Cat's greatest assets, even when his shot isn't on, is his aggressive defense. Considering that defense is our biggest problem right now, we can't afford to give him up.

I did a quick look-up of 1-6yr players who qualify for $9m that Van Horn will start making next year to see how many "franchise" players are out there deserving of the league max.

    By Draft
    98 Vince
    97 Duncan
    96 Kobe, Iverson
    95 Garnett
    94 Kidd, Hill

That's 7 franchise players in 6 yrs. That's about right in my book. All worthy of the maximum.

Here's who is not on that list of possible $9m/yr players, who I believe are steady winners and/or putting up Van Horn-level numbers for their position.

    94 Eddie Jones, Rose, Robinson
95 McDyess, Finley, Wallace (who will put Stackhouse here)
    96 Shareef, Allen, Marbury, Walker
    97 no one (maybe Mercer)
    98 Williams, Pierce

that's 13 to go with the other 7 plus Van Horn....let's not say 21 players deserve the league max of $9m for 0-6 yrs.

I don't want to get into a discussion of players deserve what the market will bare, (i agree) but I'm talking about the cap. If Duncan, Hill, Vince are only going to get $9m on next signing, then Van Horn, by comparison, is simply taking up more cap room than he should. You can do better with your money in this league.

Forget Van Horn in my opinion. If I am gonna take a chance and pay big bucks again (ala Pippen) it will be for a big, strong, defensive-minded PF. I have missed Otis Thorpe incredibly although I did enjoy Barkley. Just think if we had traded Robert Horry for Clyde Drexler in 1995 instead of Otis! We would have been awesome for a lot longer. No offense to Barkley cus we almost made it to the finals his first year and if he hadn't hurt that elbow badly I feel sure we would have beat the Jazz the next year too. (I think it was his 2nd year in the playoffs he hurt the elbow.)

Give me a Karl Malone, Otis Thorpe, Anthony Mason (without the attitude) any day over a Van Horn. No offense to Van Horn.

If we get a real good, powerful PF, I guess Cato would be good enough at center if he gets more motivated. I love Carlos and would love to keep him and Kenny Thomas but I just think we need a bigger and stronger PF.

the deal with van horn is no deal. we have about a snow flake's chance in hell to get him.he is a base year player, meaning we have to cough up 9 mil. but can only give away 4.5 mil.i think we can do much better than van horn anyway,
