Next season, Yi Jianlian would get big portion of media attention from Yao.

What that Hong Kong is part of the PRC? Officially yes but not so much in practice. Citizens of the PRC need a visa to enter Hong Kong.

hm...Asian cultures emphasize education over sports.
African cultures emphasize survival over education.

Wow, that's like a new concept huh?

No I wasn't interested in that part, since this is GARM, not D&D.

Your opening post talked about the declining of Yao's popularity (over the years) by comparing Yao's posters, ads, and jerseys to those of several other NBA superstars. You had no reference (temporal) point to make the comparison with regard to Yao's popularity. The entire premise was based on the assumptions that 1) Yao's popularity in China was solely dictated by the number of posters, ads, and jerseys in display; and 2) Yao's posters, ads, and jerseys outnumbered those of other NBA superstars at some previous point in time. These assumptions, however, are baseless.

I think for most chinese basketball fans, it's more like Yao is your player, your brother, your representitive. There is subtle differences between this and your favorate player, they can say they are Kobe fans, DWade fans, AI fans or whatever, there can be certain players that they enjoy watching more, but Yao and the Rockets are the one that they care the most.

Nope, at least the fever is still burning in his hometown Shanghai.
Jerseys & ads prove nth (Any one under 6/2 wearing his suit will feel uneasy)
But we take great attentions on his every shot, every block and every move even we are on the opposite side of the earth.(which means your night games are always held on our mornings, too bad for fans to watch live)

    wait...what????

African culture in the US??? that's what we're talking about here. primarily black players from the US who have never been to Africa in their lives. are you saying that those people...African-Americans..emphasize survival over education?? that their very survival is in jeopardy here??

    please.

Is that going to change? When I was going between the PRC and Hong Kong I noticed that PRC passport holders had to go to the Visitors line at immigration in Hong Kong and wait in line with foreigners like myself instead of the Hong Kong residents line or a different line. Going into the PRC from Hong Kong though Hong Kong residents got their own line.

My understanding of the visa requirement is that both the PRC and SAR admins are very worried about Hong Kong being overrun by people looking for jobs and so are very strictly controlling the amount of people from the PRC. I don't expect that economic disparity to change by next year so that will be interesting to see if that requirement changes.

Good point on the time reference. I shouldve added that when I was in Hong Kong and the PRC 2 years ago I saw a lot more Yao jerseys, posters and ads than I did this past month. As for basing Yao's popularity on those things I didn't conduct any polling on Yao in those countries so all I have to go on regarding his popularity is what I can see, which is why I am asking a question about Yao's popularity and not making a statement regarding Yao's popularity.

For that matter marketing is driven by popularity so it is logical that more popular playes would get more ads and more people would buy their jerseys. So that assumption is far from baseless unless you believe that marketing isn't rational.

I have a theory on why you don't see Chinese people openly cheering Yao and why some claim other players as their favorites. Chinese people had humility beat into them from birth by their parents, the education system, the culture, etc. This is the reason why there aren't as many educated cocky Chinese people as there are in other parts of the world, they're taught at an early age that cockiness is stupid and humility is great.

As for how this realtes to Yao, look at how most Chinese parents treat their children. They rarely offer praise after a job well done no matter how proud they may be, they often put down their children in an attempt to keep their attitudes in check. If Warren Buffet's parents were Chinese, they wouldn't tell him how great he was, they'd ask him why he didn't have as much money as Bill Gates.

Chinese people kind of view Yao Ming as a native son, a colletive son of China, and they apply the previously mentioned attitude to Yao. But just because not many outwardly boast for Yao, that doesn't mean they aren't proud of him or that he isn't popular, consider it a cultural difference in how popularity is shown.

    1. Like most of Americans, Chineses like to see power dunks, circus shots, flash moves and crazy scoring. Very few ppl truely enjoy watching layups, baby hooks, and big guy defending PnRs.

    2. Yao is still popular. Rox games still get higher TV ratings. Ratings mean everything, right? Though I am not sure how Reebok make money from him since Chinese are just not that into jerseys or sneakers like Americans are. Even they do buy jerseys, they probably will choose replicas because it will be a lot cheaper (the authentics will cost ordinary workers one week or even one month of salary).
