Hi fellas. I just got out of the military and I need advice. I have been in the IT field for the military and am looking for a job here in Houston. Which companies should I apply for? Does anyone here know of any available jobs? What is the interview process for civilian work? I have been in the military for 7 years and am looking for a professional job for the first time in my career. Any advice would be helpful. Thanks in advance. Jimmy
Jimmy, your combination of military and technical experience sounds perfect for an open job with NASA at Johnson Space Center that I'm aware of. Send me an email or let me know how I can get in touch with you and i'll give you the specifics if you're interested.
Can I get your email address? I have my resume and a SECRET security clearance if you need it. Thanks man I appreciate it.
I was hoping you would say that IT Security is my forte and would love to work as an IT Security Specialist, Engineer or IT Auditor.
Hi Jimmy. My email is bcjones7527@yahoo.com. Shoot me an email and I will send you all the specifics about the open position tomorrow. The military background and the clearance will really give you a leg up if you decide you might like this job, because a great deal of it concerns comsec and encrypting data.
If you are interested in IT audit let me know, i know of job opening at my company as well...dstein (at) uhy-us.com
If you're single and not going to school you're making a huge mistake. I'm sure you can probably make what seems like a lot of money compared to what you made in the service, but the quick "payout" isn't worth it. If you aren't single, I can't comment, I don't know the circumstances. Single veterans should go to school, simple as that. Speaking from experience of course.
I don't quite agree with crums17. My parents might but I don't. I don't have a degree and have been in this field for 11 years. It's just not needed unless you want to go management. Then yes, it is a hindrance. That's not my goal and I've done just fine. I partner with a company that does a lot of security work. You can send me your resume if you want and I'll see if they have any openings. Send it to michael.le (at) bayoucitygroup.com
Fair enough. The qualifier you mentioned about wanting to go in to management (eventually?) was basically the point of my post. I guess it depends on whether you have ambition or just want to be.
He didn't say he didn't have a degree. Just thought I'd point that out, although it wouldn't be unreasonable to assume he doesn't. Thanks for your service, jmejia.
Thanks for the advice, but I am married and will graduate with my BS on May of this year. I really appreciate everyones concern, really
Congrats and thanks for your service. I am sure your friends and oved ones are very happy, and proud of you for completeing that service.
Thanks Deckard, but I think that there is a misconception about military members that go in to the military and come out with nothing. I think that this is a concern but at the same time it is bad to assume someone is not prepared. But thanks.
There are several recruiting companies that specialize in either ex-military or clearance job openings. I'm not sure of the names but you should be able to google them. Your clearance especially should make you desirable by a lot of firms. I haven't used these sites but I would recommend at least checking them out. http://www.clearancejobs.com http://www.clearedjobs.net http://www.clearedconnections.com Aside from Monster, Hotjobs, Careerbuilder etc you might check out DICE.com which has more technical focus. Also SecurityFocus.com has a jobs section. You might also check with companies like BMC Software, headquartered in Houston. They're fairly big and more than likely would be interested in someone with security and a clearance. I would also check into companies like IBM, CSC, EDS, PWC, and BearingPoint that have expanding security operations.
Thanks again. I have already looked on all the job search engines and am just waiting for someone to call me. I had to come here because it has proven to be the best place for any help.l
If you're looking for a quick AD admin + Unix specialist, the place where I work might need some help in the downtown area. It could be something to get you started, and then you can use it to jumpstart to something else, or stay here maybe if you like the atmosphere. Sent you an email through the board. Tip of my sombrero for you, brother. Much respect.
