How come the NBA can get the stars to compete in this event and can't get stars to do the dunk contest?

Wade to Defend His Title, Faces Tough Competition
Dwyane Wade, Kobe Bryant, LeBron James and Steve Nash react to being chosen for the PlayStation Skills Challenge.

NEW YORK, Jan. 29, 2007 – Miami Heat guard Dwyane Wade will defend his PlayStation® Skills Challenge title against three of the league’s biggest stars on Feb. 17 as part of NBA All-Star Saturday Night at Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas. The competitors hoping to deny Wade’s quest for a repeat are the Los Angeles Lakers’ Kobe Bryant, the Cleveland Cavaliers’ LeBron James and the Phoenix Suns’ Steve Nash.

The PlayStation Skills Challenge was introduced at NBA All-Star 2003 in Atlanta and consists of four players competing in a two-round timed “obstacle course” consisting of dribbling, passing and shooting stations. All players must observe basic NBA ball-handling rules while completing the course. The two players with the fastest times from the first round advance to the finals with the order of competition determined by inverse order of the first round times. At the discretion of the referee, television instant replay may be consulted for clarification of rules compliance.

Wade, who defeated James in the finals of the 2006 PlayStation Skills Challenge in Houston, is tied with Bryant for third in the NBA in scoring, averaging 28.4 points per game. Nash, who won the event in 2005 in Denver, currently leads the league in assists with 11.8 per game. James, who was the leading vote-getter for this year’s All-Star game, is seventh in the league in scoring at 27.2 points per game.

The PlayStation Skills Challenge will be televised live nationally as part of the NBA All-Star Saturday Night, which will also feature the Foot Locker Three-Point Shootout, Sprite Rising Stars Slam Dunk and Haier Shooting Stars. TNT and ESPN Radio’s national coverage will begin at 8 p.m. EST from the Thomas & Mack Center. The NBA All-Star Game on Sunday, Feb. 18, will air live on TNT, ESPN Radio and in more than 200 countries and territories worldwide.

I think the dunk contest is only for 1st and 2nd year guys now.

Am I being a homer here or would Tmac stand a great chance of cleaning up in this event?

Pretty sure Tmac would beat out LeBron and Kobe. But Nash and Dwayde...ehhh. It'd be fun to see Tmac in that mix though.

I think Skip-to-My-Lou can win the skill challenge! You need to be fast, agile and accurate and you don't need high IQ... :D

i never thought the skills challenge would have this kind of star power. even though i like it, it seems so gimmicky but maybe the players like it also.

    now about the dunk contest...

Nash should really be the favorite to win this event. He has the speed, shot, and passing accuracy. Kobe and Lebron will probably get the dunk off faster but that would only be a very marginal time difference.

That'd be cool if Skip was also in this competition.

It won't happen. If Skip joins, the big 4 won't show up.... ;)

It seems like a competition that would bias heavily to the smaller guys. Notice the position all the past winners play. I don't think McGrady would do that well in it because he's too tall. Doubly true for Lebron James. I can see Kobe doing fairly well, but it seems to me it's between Wade and Nash. I do think Skip would do pretty well, unless shooting a tear drop is one of the tests.

Think nash will win it, but i also give Kobe a chance. He will probably build the challenge coarse in his home and practice all day.

skills contest cause they still get recognition, it's low effort, and they don't have to worry about injury.

also, nash will rip it up here

Didn't think this deserved its own thread, but Dwight Howard has announced he will be in the dunk contest.
