He is owed $23 after this season after he picks up his option for the next two years. I would love to have him and obviously Portland doesn't want him but there's no way we could afford him.

What my question is in regards to Raef is, can Portland pay him a lump sum to not exercise his 2 year $23 million option, and then just have that lump sum apply to this year's salary cap? That way it's over and done with now. If they wait until he exercises to buy him out, then he is prorated against the next 2 years, which would be a lot harder to do. But, if they could pay him, say $14-$17 million to walk away and not exercise his option, I think it would make sense for them to do that.

I think Raef would be a perfect fit here as an extra big for the playoff run. He's one of the best 3 point shooting big men in this league. Not to mention, he has been a defensive intimidator in years past. Not a great rebounder but he's a position rebounder, which is fine by me.

I wished some of the salary cap experts would weigh in here on how a buyout of Raef's OPTION would work.

No. He has three more years on his contract (including this season) starting at almost $11 million and only getting worse the next two seasons.

agreed. we won a championship with chilly pete and chuck #1... this group is fine. i don't understand the "we can always improve" mentality...very shortsighted...

well what's been consistent so far in the season is rockets get teabagged by the top or streaking teams.

rockets are winning against weaker teams. that's not a knock on them since previous rockets teams were very inconsistent against those type of teams.

the bigger picture is winning it all and imo rockets do need to improve more than the suns, dallas, miami, detroit, or spurs. even all those teams are still trying to improve their roster.

Wait. I'm confused, because it seems like you're trying to disagree with me when we COMPLETELY agree. We definitely need another point guard. As to the person who suggested Steve Francis, I'd love that - but I'm just not sure the Knicks are going to buy him out. 40 million dollars is a whole lot of money to throw away just to get the guy off your roster. Is he even healthy?

But basically, I don't care who they bring in so long as he's a point guard who is ready to contribute in the NBA. Neither VSpan or JL3 appear to be ready now - and they may never be. We'll see.

I don't know how well he fits with the current group, but rarely used forward James Singleton of the LA Clippers apparently wants out. He's a 6'8 forward who can probably play SF or PF. He can potentially be a great defender. He's an athletic freak, and he's a good rebounder. He looks to have some 3-point range as well.

We are taking care of the weaker teams but we have also beaten good teams. We have beaten the Spurs, Mavs, Lakers, Jazz, Heat, Wizards, etc so we can take on any team. Since we have the TE, I wouldn't mind CD tweaking (fine-tuning, whatever you call it) the roster.

Thanks for the info, I didn't know he had that many years left on his fat contract. I do like him as a fit though.

Would Duhon be obtainable? Could he make outside shots with Yao and T-Mac demanding so much attention?

Dennis is playing games. There is noway there not trying to upgrade at the PG. a combo of Rfer, lucas and Vspan is not gonna cut it in the playoffs. we need a defensive minded PG as rafers bckup. somene like Eric Snow minus the contract.

if a GM says they are looking to stay pat, it means they are looking to trade...if they don't make a move to shore up our PG position and add a back up 4/5, I would be shocked...I think mgmt realizes that we have a team that is close to being a real contender and they wont waste it by staying with this team the way it is.......i'm sure CD will make a trade..he always has and we rarely stand pat....i hope we adress at least one of thosse spots and preferably both....if we can do that...look out ...here we come...

management have stated only one trade idea, and that is for frontcourt, everything else is a wishlist of the fans.

some people in here will be dissappointed in any scenario because they didn't get what they want. your wishes are a PG AND 4/5?

and if the rox don't get that, look out, they're going to stink in the playoffs?

since it is YOUR hope that rox get a PG and 4/5, who is available? who can the rox trade for those players to be able to help? If you are SURE that CD will make those trades, be more specific

Not stink, exactly. Just not have a chance to get passed Suns/Mavs.

Rox could be 3rd best team in all the basketball world -- and get swept by either in the spring.

so YOU also think to be able to compete with those 2 teams the rox MUST make a trade for both a PG and 4/5?

They also claimed no trade of Francis right up until the media leaked the T-Mac deal early on.

No, I wasn't trying to disagree with you (although I should probably have looked over your post again), but actually agreeing. We keep worrying about Alston's job as a starter (well, some of us do), when we should be worrying more about who's behind him. We're on the same page! :)
