Damn...I'm not sure what kind of technical school it was, but I'm pretty sure a lot of those schools don't teach those type of classes...

    Violence is not the answer...

Maybe just teach history in the history classes, don't remove references to important black people, and get rid of black history month. Wouldn't that make more sense?

Yes. Everyone should be taught real history. We should learn who really invented the telephone, and lightbulb, other important contributions by to our history by African Americans, and not marginalize it.

i was flipping around last night and caught the end of a show on george washington carver. i always knew he was the guy who "invented the peanut", but i didnt know about all his achievements in helping southern black farmers by traveling around teaching them better farming techniques and developing new and different uses for their crops. he was literally a traveling agriculture school.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Washington_Carver
"Carver had an interest in helping poor Southern farmers who were working poor quality soils that had been depleted of nutrients by repeated plantings of cotton crops. He and other agricultural workers urged farmers to restore nitrogen to their soils by practicing systematic crop rotation, alternating cotton crops with plantings of sweet potatoes or legumes (such as peanuts, soybeans and cowpeas) that were also sources of protein. Following the crop rotation practice resulted in improved cotton yields and gave farmers new foods and alternative cash crops to sell."

"In addition, he founded an industrial research laboratory where he and assistants worked to popularize use of the new plants by developing hundreds of applications for them through original research and also by more deeply examining recipes and applications that they collected from others."

"Carver developed three hundred applications for peanuts and 118 for sweet potatoes, (http://www.npg.si.edu/edu/brush/guide/unit2/carver.html) including bleach, metal polish, paper, plastic, glue for postage stamps, printer's ink, plant milk, cooking oils, flour, instant coffee, mayonnaise, meat tenderizer, cheese, dyes, shaving cream, shoe polish, synthetic rubber, talcum powder, wood stains, varnish, soap, vinegar and cooking sauces. He made similar investigations into uses for cowpeas, soybeans and pecans."

all his accomplishments are even more amazing in light of the fact that he was born and grew up as a slave.

I thought it was interesting that the guy wore a headset to block out all sound. Seems like he didn't want to hear the consequences of his actions. I don't think this had anything to do with Black History Month, but more to do with a psychopath bent on performing violent acts.

Oh yeah, it's an inappropriate name for a city. And the crazy stabber guy doesn't help.

...AND it also happens to be my hometown. I always thought it was odd I lived in a place actually called Plantation. It's actually pretty nice, a few Miami Dolphins and Fat Joe live there, for example. Not that the celebrities make it nicer, just that they usually live in nice areas, you know what I mean... Anyways, hopefully I can end my short hiatus and finally move back. And I used to work in Coconut Creek to boot!

And I second rrj's thoughts. Do technical schools teach any type of history classes period? I thought they only taught material that can be immediately applied in the job market.

So the guy was pissed they weren't teaching black history in his automotive repair class?

I'm guessing techical schools really don't have history classes. And at a University I wouldn't expect to hear too much about it unless it's a history (or maybe Literature) class. Is the teacher supposed to discuss the important black figures in the computer aided drafting field or instead teach the skills needed for that profession?

I never had any "black" history in college except for when it naturally occured. In history class we didn't jump from the American Revolution to Brown v Board of Education just because it was February. The major black figures and historical events were covered when we got the them in the linear timeline. We didn't lump it all together in Feburary. That's a better method than covering it all in one month and then neglecting it the rest of the year.

I like all these solutions. Far better to make this a broader issue than to just assume the most likely scenario, that this guy was already mentally disturbed.

I am for violence if non-violence means we continue postponing a solution to the American black man's problem - just to avoid violence. I don't go for non-violence if it also means a delayed solution. To me a delayed solution is a non-solution. Or I'll say it another way. If it must take violence to get the black man his human rights in this country, I'm for violence exactly as you know the Irish, the Poles, or Jews would be if they were flagrantly discriminated against.
