Glengarry Glen Ross, an incredible but depressing film. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0104348/ The movie's written by David Mamet, who's also behind a lot of other great movies, too many to list. But another one of his I'd definitely recommend is House of Games. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0093223/
Oh? And you do? Why dont you shed some light on the subject for those of us who are not as smart as you are?
He's trying to motivate his players to play smarter and harder. "Show me you can play" ... don't just go through the motions simply because the team has a big lead. He's reminding these bench players that every minute they're on the court, they are expected to compete at a high level and not to dog it. In particular, the guys who want to play more minutes like Bonzi and Billy need to know that. I don't get what the big deal is.
there *is* no big deal. first, the person you are replying to *assumes* VG doesnt like Bonzi and then he seems to think that reminding your professional basketball players to not slack off during garbage time is a bad thing. neither supposition is logical so the point is moot.
Bonzi can play no doubt about it.. he should have said.. "show me you can play with my boys, tmac and rafer... "
Do you really think it has anything to do with like or dislike?? If you went through the motions at your job do you think you would get promotions? No you wouldn't. The important thing to keep in mind is that these are paid professionals. They are not high school kids playing a sport for fun. If I asked for a promotions and my boss told me that I needed to meet a quota to get that promotion then by golly I'd bust my tush to meet the quota! This is the same thing, only JVG has to tell him to do it on the court instead. Oh and LOVE the Glengarry clip!! I haven't seen that movie since it first came out on video
Bonzi is one of the only players outside of Luther that comes off our bench who can score. If they arent high school players why does JVG use high school offensive plays? Why does he use High school tatics to get production...or should i say try to get production. If my boss talked to me like that he wouldnt have to fire me, I would quite. Iam grown man, if another grown man wants to disrespect me we can go to the yard.
from r2k's vid, it is at about 1:19:50 mark. but as stated here, it doesn't mean a whole lot here is a bit of vg's thoughts "I think it helps if you have the right guys that don't take it for granted that they are going to play," he said. "It's not that they're going to play no matter what happens. It means they get first chance. Our guys are good about that. You've got to stay on guard, because it doesn't take a lot of change to really alter the outcome." bonzi still is in the rotation, and will be. vg keeping him honest
JVG has an old school mode of motivation, the power of fear and fear of power. It can't be terribly effective with millionaire players, but I think most of the Rockets are nice guys who want to humor him. Setting players up to fail by giving them very few minutes with the scrubs, hardly time to get comfortable and get aclimated, and then calling them out in the media---bush league. I know VSpan should have not used the media to complain, but, two wrongs don't make a right. Sit down together and work a plan of improvement. A little encouragement wouldn't hurt. Good Grief!
Yes and you just proved my point. Pro-athletes are usually meglomaniacs. this is brought on by the treatment they receive growing up through high school, into college and then being courted during the draft process. They basically are instant millionaires the minute they get drafted and this usually goes to their head unless they have good quality, stable people around them giving them sound advice. They almost feel like they deserve to play rather then having to work for it. Its the coaches job (football, baseball, basketball, etc) to instill discipline, rank and professionalism in the players and not to give anyone special treatment; franchise player or not. In sports its just like the military, its my way (coach) or the highway.... Players who are too thin skinned (ala Stromile and Steve Francis) can't deal with this authority telling them what to do and thus usually suffer as a result. Great players thrive in this atmosphere and are usually the coaches extension out on the floor; (ie. Bird, Jordan, Hakeem, etc). for JVG to tell his players to prove they should play should be motiviation enough for them to bust their asses off the court and make good on the chances they get on the court. If you have pride you will take this as a challnge, if you don't have pride you will feel hurt and react negatively and probably should take up a new career because you will never suceed at this level being soft skinned. this whole mean spirited, everybody is equal BS is so hippie-narcisistic and doesn't really apply to real life or sports.
