If George Bush and his group
were to Suspend elections in 2008
    for whatever reason
    and
    declare emergency powers, blah blah
and declare they will be in power until the Emergency has past

What do you beleive would happen?

honestly, I really don't think too much would happen
    I mean. . . I don't think their would be armed response
A bunch of People would B*tch and Moan
    Maybe alot of protest
    but
do you think Civil War or Armed resistance would happen?

What do you think it would take for the American Public to mobilize?

At this point, I wouldn't be surprised if he tried something like that. BTW if he does, I'm going to start reading Alex Jones.

Bush has absolutely no traditional Republican values and I'm certain he's not a Democract, so he's basically screwed and has no power at all except to make the gov't as bloated as possible so he can get special interest handouts once he leaves the Oval Office (good riddance).

A Military Draft might do it.

Another question is, if he does that, can he be impeached? If so, impeached for what?

if he does that, there won't be an impeachment process. He'll be arrested. If they didn't suspend elections after 9/11, they're not going to suspend them in 2008 unless they can whip up a scenario like on 24...ugh, stupid Alex Jones, now he's got me paranoid.

Arrested for what? Maybe he can start a war with Iran and claim emergency power?

Did you think it was a possibility that a REPUBLICAN President would create an oversight group for every government agency who would then report directly to the President? Essentially adding another 2 layers of bureaucractic control to the Presidential office? Could you have seen this happeneing guring Clinton?

I don't think a mobilization of the people would even be necessary. For that kind of stuff, you need the allegiance of the military. I don't think he'd have it. Not because he's not popular with the military, but just because they'd be much more loyal to the Republic than to a particular person.

Completely hypothetical, because regardless of how bad you hate Bush, only an idiot would believe that he wants to suspend elections, what would happen?

Assassination. We live in an informed society where many, many people really love their liberty and are willing to die for it. The government has restricted the Second Amendment to the point that it would be tough to overthrow a tyrannical government. But it wouldn't be tough to assassinate a dictator.

It is ok. It can be fun. Plus, we might learn a thing or two regarding emergency power. :)

He didn't do that because he wasn't sure how Americans would react.

Since then, he passed many laws to expand executive power without much opposition. The spineless democrats might just embolden him to do crazy things should another 9/11 arises.

I don't think he or anyone has anything close to the power to postpone an election. If he did im sure he will be impeached, congress would not have the balls NOT to impeach him.

For your second question, nothing, i think he can declare the need to drop the bomb in the middle of our country and we still wont revolt.

Impeach for what? Declaring Emergency Power is well within the rights of a President. This is no high crime or treason

What we would need would be immediate and as close to total work stoppage as possible.

Massive general strikes. the country can't run without manpower. People would need to be willing to sacrifice their lives just as they would in a revolt, but there wouldn't be any violence from those looking to remove Bush.

The economy would completely stop, and nothing could be done.

Honestly, I think this should be in Hangout as a discussion of science fiction plot lines, but RR is seriously interested in the subject. It ain't gonna happen, RR. I know Heinlein wrote about it a lot, but he was mostly kidding.

Maybe he can convince the Trade Federation to invade Naboo, then convince the Queen to order for a vote of No Confidence which would make him the new Supreme Chancellor. That would give him the power to manipulate the Senate into giving him even more power, all the while building an army of clones to "protect" the Republic. He would later dissolve the Republic and use these clones, along with the Death Star, to enforce the will of the newly formed Galactic Empire.

    It could happen.
