I've watched him a decent amount this year and he has the rare ability to take over games when he wants to for long stretches and be the whole offense for New Jersey. He stilll has tremendous athleticism and is not afraid to go to the basket. He picks up a fair amount of assists even though he's playing on a team with Jason Kidd. But for whatever reason the Nets still don't win as much as they should.

What separates him from the Kobe/Lebron/Wade (and lately McGrady) of the universe? Why can't he take it to the next level?

Overall skills. Not as good a passer as LeBron or McGrady, not as good defensively as Kobe, not as much of a clutch player (although he does have his share of clutch moments) as Wade. Just a notch below. Still a great player, very underrated (even though most would say he's overrated).

He's a scorer who picks up his assists by dominating the ball so much. He just isn't the play-maker that the elite guys are. He doesn't make his team mates better.

    Of course he does.

He and Tmac are very similar

The only difference is Tmac has a little better court vision

He just willed the Nets toa a victory.

If the guy wasn't so soft, he would have been Michael Jordan +

He isnt consistent. Like Tmac he hits stretches where he settles for long jumpers and 3's way too much. Not very vocal on the floor.

Like Tmac he USED TO settle

Now that they have been thrust onto the spotlight and forced to take over games, they can't hide anymore (no Yao and no Jefferson) and there's nobody better in the history of the NBA better than Tmac and Carter

The problem is they don't have that continously burning fire that Jordan had

THere's no question in my mind Tmac and Carter are the 2 most physically gifted perimeter players in the history of the NBA. THey are more mature now, and both of them will have impressive finishes to their respective careers.

I am a Tmac fan, but I can appreciate Carter's greatness.

They can make 35 foot jumpers look like layups. Lebron is a great player, but the game doesn't come as easy to him as it does to Tmac and Vince. These guys can score 30 in their sleep.

Actually I don't think he dominates the ball that much at all.

The problem with Vince is that, at times, he does not have the motivation to take over games. When he wants to, he can pretty much score on anybody. But for some odd reason he chooses not to. But when he wants to turn it on, he does. That's just the way he is.

I think he's done well just very recently because for once he's not voted in as a starter for the allstar game. Now he has that motivation to show that he still got it.

That's what I'm talkng about. He pretty much singlehandedly won them the game in the 4th period.

VC is just plain soft IMO. He's toughened up some since joining the Nets. One big difference between him and Tracy is Tracy plays out of his mind in the playoffs. Earlier in his career, VC became passive in the playoffs to the point of being called out by teammates and fans.

I don't even think he's soft. He just tries when he wants to. His work ethic and attitude suck. If you watch him play enough you can see when he tries he's damn near unguardable. he's not like TMac at all really. TMac is a much better defender, passer and rebounder. Carter is a much better scorer (when he tries) and way better shooter and athlete.

I disagree with that, while he's only been 4 times, he was a badass in 2001 and pretty much dragged the Raptors into the second round by himself, dropping a 50 spot on Philly along the way. He was also pretty good last year. Granted he is not an all-time killer, but he doesn't exactly wilt either.

But Tmac never passed the 1st Rd

    Vince has gone to ECF

Tmac is still better but he needs to get out of the 1st RD!

Vince likes to turn it on and off whenever he wants. That Clippers game last week..talk about mailing it in for a half. He does virtually nothing in the first half and decides to turn it on in the 2nd. I mean...he had the likes of Mobley and Ross on him..he could have dropped 40-45 easy that night. For that period of 2-3 years when he was with the Raptors...that was awe inspiring stuff. But then it tailed off...who knows why or how it started

Vince might be the most talented player in the NBA, but he just doesn't havn't the desire to be the best, if only he had Kobe's desire to be the top player in the league...

    No he's not.

He's capable of taking over a game, and putting a team on his back and carrying them to victory like he did down the stretch tonight (and like he has done a few times on this road-trip). That's not "just a highlight machine".

THe question is why he can't get anywhere despite being one of a few people in the universe with this kind of ability.
