"...but it's a way to get bigger, faster stronger guys playing against our players."

    Men Playing Women's Basketball

Male practice players have helped make women's basketball teams quicker, faster, and stronger. A practice used frequently at prominent programs such as UConn, Stanford and Notre Dame.

What they neglect to talk about is the self esteem of these men off the court, something I would have liked to hear about.

Sorry if this has been posted before!

I think Tennessee has been doing this for a while actually.

There are plenty of female athletes, both elite level and below, who would destroy 95-99% of american males in competition (with the exception of Fatty Fat b*stard). Most Division I female BB players could play circles around most average joes. Most female collegiate (and some high school) track athletes would smoke your ass in a race. Laila Ali would knock your (or my) ass out if we stepped in the ring. It's not that hard for me to accept this.

At William & Mary, the girl's varsity would often come in to play pick up against guys at the student gym. There's nothing wrong with it. The only trick was, the female players tended to be more rough (grabbing, holding, elbowing) than the guys and some had a tendency to flip out if a guy responded likewise. Normally it wasn't a big deal at all.

Many schools currently do this and the NCAA is looking to put a stop to it. One of the reasons the NCAA is giving is that the men practicing are denying practice time to the end of the bench players. The women's coaches are up in arms about the possibility of this ending.

I love how posting on a message board makes me uncapable of physical activity. I've played against college girls on a D-1 basketball team who want to run with the guys, it's just a joke. I'm only 6'1 but have little problem guarding the 6'7-6'8 girls and the guards just cannot get a shot off. You're not getting "smoked" by females in basketball if you can play the game and are somewhat athletic.

I'm trying to figure out why:

    a. This would result in self-esteem issues for any guy who did it.
    b. A coach trying to improve her players gets tagged with a derogatory nickname.

This seems like a smart way to help improve players. Why anyone would be critical of this practice or seemingly threatened by it is beyond me.

Agreed, therefore I retract the part where I said "Ronny is uncapable (incapable) of physical activity because he posts on a message board", which does not exist, so it's hard to retract it.

Anyway didn't you answer your own question then? How was your self-esteem afterwards?

Been going on for awhile now. My high schools girls bball team has done it for awhile now. They call the guys who practice with em, the "Dream Team" mainly consisted of basketball players who either decide to quit or get cut at the varsity level. I heard somewhere that i think Ohio States girls bball coach is trying to stop this practice, at least at the collegiate level. Something about Title IX or something. Havent followed up on it, anyone know whats going on with that?

I agree. I'm 6'1" as well and have no trouble dominating any D1 women ball players that I have played against. I still respect their game, but they just aren't on the same level. With that said, I haven't had the chance to play against Courtney Paris yet. She is a beast.

Also, I don't see any shame in helping these women to improve their game. I've actually thought about doing it here.

I agree to practice with them, as long as I'm invited to bake cookies and cupcakes afterwards.

When I was a freshman in HS, the freshmen would practice with the varsity girls about once a week or so. I think we beat them every time we scrimmaged IIRC, which surprised me a little bit since we were really bad (think we only won a few games that year, while the girls went to the playoffs).

I can't really say how we'd fare if there was better talent in the area though. The best player in recent years (all-region and stuff like that) is playing D3 basketball right now I think, so we didn't really have anything on par with D1 talent. I didn't have any problems with the practices, except for the insane conditioning workout the girl's coach used. It seemed like it made the girls better, and we probably got better too due to the extra scrimmage time working as a team. Since the girls were better-skilled than us, I think it helped us learn some of the fundamentals better (not going for pump fakes, fighting through screens, etc.).

I think they quit doing it after that year though.

I don't think so. I used to play pick up games at UT with of some the lady longhorns and they didn't outclass me and I'm a total scrub. I'm 5'6" with suspect handles and an inconsistent jumpshot. Speedwise I ran circles around them. I'm not saying I could keep up with Miller, Swoops or Cooper but the average D1 female basketball player has the same ability as a JV team at a good highschool like Duncanville or one of the Alief schools.
