I recently fell victim to the sales ads. I figured; $300 off any DLP, no intrest until 2010, and a $100 gift certificate to nflshop.com (w samsung) was a pretty good deal. The sales person at Best Buy swears that I needed a HDMI cable to go with my HDTV. I told them that my Time Warner HD box came w component cables (red, blue, green). They swore that I was not doing my TV justice and that I needed this $100 HDMI cable to truely enjoy it. Is this going to be a noticable difference between HDMI and component cables???
Anyone with Direct TV know if the AV (red, white, yellow) cables are the only way to connect the direct tv box to an HDTV? Just wondering since I didn't see any HDMI outputs...
^^^RCA plugs are not HD. Your using the wrong box. A 6foot cable from best buy was $100. I know a 3' cable at Frys is $40. They swore the 3' cable would not stretch on that TV. I folded a bought the cable, but Im thinking of returning it and putting that money toward a surround sound system.
Your TV should work just fine with the component cables. Since you already have then; use them. If you want an HDMI cable go to monoprice.com. They have good cables for very reasonable prices. Don't buy name brand HDMI cables (ie Monster) unless you want to spend big bucks.
Gummi, you can buy HDMI cables for cheap. I got mine at frys for $18. you can even get them cheaper online.
both component and hdmi will give you a HD signal.... hdmi will be a digital signal where as component will be an analog signal. the differences are slight, and not recognizable to the average viewer. buy both cables and test it out, results will vary with differing tvs. $100 is ridiculous. are they made by monster? those are known to be some of the most expensive, while giving you the same results.
There's a reason they were pushing the cables, and that's because the store marks them up 1000%. It was a total upsale, like undercoating at a car dealership. Makes you wonder how much the sales guys make off of those cables.
you might have issues with hdmi from Time Warner. I do. sometimes it works, sometimes it doesnt. Component works all the time. I can tell a slight difference.
I got my HDMI cables from EPO on Fondren (close to Westpark). They have 6ft HDMI cables for $10. Electronic Parts Outlet 3753-B Fondren Rd Houston, Tx 77063 (713) 784-0140
I got my 6' HDMI cable on Ebay (dont remember the seller) but it was $10 total (shipping and everything)... For HDTV component cable is good enough - there wont be alot of difference if you use HDMI. Now if you decide to get an upconverting DVD player so you can really enjoy your movies...that only works with HDMI.
My understanding was that both would let you see HD in 1080i -- the highest resolution for broadcast HD. Is this correct?
Got this at my local Walmart. 6ft HDMI from Philips for $28. The guy from best buy told me unless I was watching Blueray, HD-DVD, or playing PS3. I would not see much difference between these and the $100 Monster HDMI. http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=5000839
oh, and FWIW, for me, there was a huge difference between component and hdmi. the audio is much better.
