    :D

it's because they're not equipped. because they don't prepare for that sort of weather. they don't have central A/C like we do here. we don't have machinery to help deal with icy roads...nor do we have the first clue of how to drive on icy roads.

everything has context. i tend to scoff at the scoffers who pretend they're smarter/braver/stronger/macho-er than everyone else. :)

It's UH...if you don't wanna go to class on a cold, icy day why wait for the University to tell you so...just don't go.

And as for all the scoffers...screw you guys..I'm enjoying my day off!

My class at Rice was cut short last night for the weather. I was annoyed; I'm paying good money for them to teach me. Damn slacker school!

Just imagine, you don't have to wait in line for Street Fighter or Mortal Kombat down at the UC. Oh wait, is this still 1993?

Last year when this happened I was still at Texas State. The University announced on it's website that school would start at 10 AM. This particular section of the site allowed people to post comments about news items. A bunch of student started whining and complaining. Some of 'em lived in Austin or San Antonio but the vast majority lived on campus or within a couple of miles. They were just looking for an excuse to skip. I had to drive 40 miles to go to UH when I went there. And there was some horrible weather sometimes. BFD. Get over it. Don't drive like a moron and you'll be fine.

Does UCLA or USC cancel class when it rains in LA?

Point being that supposedly people from SoCal freak out when it rains and don't know how to drive in the rain. Traffic slows to 5 MPH. If we should cancel school because people don't know how to drive in icy conditions, should school in SoCal cancel class when it rains?

freak out or not...the roads aren't nearly as dangerous wet as they are frozen....no matter your level of experience in driving them. i promise you, if this very same event happened in LA that we're experiencing now happened in SoCal, those schools would be closed down.

    drive slower?

i wasn't insinuating i was braver or smarter or whatever. i was simply making the point that people overreact.

We get winter as cold as -20 and summer as hot as 110. We don't complain about either. :p Okay maybe we do sometimes.

look, it's an event that happens about once every 10 years here or so. that, in my mind, makes it pretty understandable that people are made uncomfortable about the thought of driving in it. that's all. it's out of an abundance of caution, to be sure. but the world won't stop turning because a school district or college decides they'd rather just call the day off. i wouldn't have been real thrilled about putting my 6 year old on a school bus this morning. call that overreaction or whatever else you want.
