I built a pc about 6 or 7 months ago. the processor is an amd athlon 4600 64x2. or something like that. and the mother board came as part of a bundle. last week it went into sleep mode on its own and i couldnt shut it down with the power button in the front, i then shut down the power switch in the back and it turned off. i tried to turn in on about a minute later and it did not work. It has yet to start up. I think the power supply burnt out. here is my question, how can i know if it was the power supply and about how much is it (if they even sell it seperately) to replace it. is it possible that the processor burnt out and is no longer working. im trying not to panic but im prepared for the worst. Any advice or suggestions to check or solve the problem would be appreciated, i need to get it working this week since classes start in a couple of days.
If it's your power supply, the light on the motherboad wouldn't turn on. If the ps is at fault, replace it with a ps thats at least 350 watts....or higher depending on your video card. I would suggest reading the reviews on newegg and hard forum to figure out which ps is best for you. It could possibly be the motherboard that died, not the ps or cpu. It's really hard to diagnose this type of problem over the internet, try asking a friend who is proficient with computers to take a look at it or take it to best buys geek squad and be prepared to pay an arm and a leg to have ti repaired.
Easiest, well not that easy, but simple way to figure out whats wrong is to replace one part with a part that you know is working. So start with anything that isn't your motherboard or cpu. My computer wouldn't turn on once and it turned out to be the video card that caused the problem. If you dont have the parts then just go to the local frys and "rent" whatever your need.
You sure it's not your power button? You should try shorting the pins on the motherboard where the power button plugs in (you can do it with a screwdriver -- just touch the screwdriver to both pins at once). If it powers-on, then your power button itself is the problem. It could also be that the power button connector came loose from the motherboard pins. If it doesn't power on, I'd try pulling the power connectors to your motherboard, then re-seating them. If that's no good, try what madmonkey suggested.
Great tips, thanks guys. I think I will slowly replace different parts and return the ones that are not at fault, I wll begin with the power source, but I think I will try messing with the pins to make sure its not one of those little problems
