The question is whether you would reverse the trade right now, not if you think we overpaid or if it still needs time. Basically, if you were GM and Jerry West called up and said he would trade Gay and Swift back for Battier, would you do it. Plain and simple. I definitely would not.
Let's not get ridiculous here. Gay played on a team with three other first round picks and led a really good UConn team to 30 wins last year before getting upset in OT by George Mason in the Elite 8. Griffin was too busy trying to kill teammate Ty Shine and winning something sad like 10 games a year.
This is true. I shouldn't say that Battier has been what we expected. He has been better than expected. That said, it looks to me like the best possible scenario come playoff time is that Battier and Wells are battling it out for who should play the biggest offensive role. Battier shouldn't automatically pass the ball because Krzyzewski said it the right thing to do. For the Rockets to be as good as their talent will take them, I think Battier has to shut up and take more responsibility. I would not have said that earlier in the year, but I am now starting to expect more from him... and when Yao returns he better not disappear again.
We can live without either Yao or Tmac. But if we don't have Shane, we're just as good as our rocks 2004 team.
never.... NEVER... NEVER EVER EVER compare Ryan Bowen to the likes of Shane Battier. are you kidding yourself??
But Battier is only averaging 10.9 ppg and 4.3 rpg this season. I can't believe we traded our 8th pick for that.
While a lot of us think Rudy Gay is a potentual all star material, near 7 NBA teams do not seem to agree with it... (exclude Roy)
To those of you who said we overpaid for Battier, please explain why? Swift is a worthless roster filler; a career backup player with no potential. Just how much do you think the #8 pick was worth last year (which was a very weak draft)? Those who insist we could have gotten Memphis later pick in the 1st round, what if it was a deal-breaker? Some of you act like we could have demanded it from the Grizz and they would have caved in automatically. How do you know we didn't try and the Grizz walked away from it?
People seriously overrated the value of the 8th pick. All you got to do is go back and look at how often the 8th pick turned into even an average NBA player. I think most people would be surprised at how much of a craps shoot these mid-lottery draft picks can be.
if the rockets get to the finals, and whatever east team decides to show up, i would say this was one of the best trades the rockets have EVER made, if not the best. a lot of fans didn't think at the time it was a good trade, BUT thank god cd doesn't evaluate players based on fan opinion. he knew what battier could bring to the table. the argument stands yesterday and today, it just happens that fans realize something that was always there. pan out is a big if???? no doubt gay is a physical specimen... but, this is my opinion, if he doesn't get to the level of tmac, but still becomes something of an allstar, I still would think this was the right trade because battier fits incredibly well with yao and tmac. we don't need gay, reason being because we have tmac, length, athleticism, everything gay could be, tmac is. and the back? having battier now was the right decision, mainly as everyone knows, how long is the back going to hold up? i for one am not willing to wait 5 more years for gay to mature. the time is ripe now to try and win it. and if patterson can keep tmac together for 6 more months, this is the closest the rockets have sniffed the championship for too long of a time.
Cough, cough, McGrady, cough. Who would possibly doubt that it would be a great trade if the Rockets got to the NBA Finals in year one? I don't understand what battle you're fighting.
kudos to Clutch for being a straight up poster and saying he loves Battier over continuing a tired draft day thing. I knew Clutch would love Battier...we all knew that....he said that! I was excited draft day on that trade...yah me. only until i came here to read stuff did i admit and agree that we overspent. Plus I was just flat out bummed that Clutch was pissed, knowing full well Battier is his Daddy. I don't know. I think I'm just one of those guys who doesn't get too excited about first round picks vs established stars .... unless that pick is Yao Ming! I still believe that putting my Cuttino Mobley bobblehead on the TV right before the lottery is what did it!
correction...I meant to say "established nba players." Didn't mean to call him a "star." -Like everyone else, I didn't know just how much I'd love Battier.
FOR THE LAST FREAKING TIME. WE WOULDNT HAVE PICKED RUDY GAY, so whatever happens to him doesn't have anything to do with it... It would be Swift and Thabo SEFOLOSHA or Battier. And in that case, i would definately have battier. Stop the gay talk.
Bat is the man what can I say... I didnt expect him to play this well.. who cares about the trade... what done is done... and we did it to win now not in 2 or 3 years... my question is... is Bat good enough to be our third option... can he create enough to be it.... so far he has surpassed all my expectations... if we could find Bats to fill every position other then Tmac and Yao's I would die happy
The debate is what we thought the Rockets should have done. Probably 90% of posters here think Gay was the best selection at #8. So you are correct Rudy Gay wasn't in the picture for the Rockets but he is for the sake of discussion on what many wanted the Rockets to do.
Rudy Gay's struggling. That's cool, maybe we can get him back. How bout the expiring contract of Sura + Bonzi + first round pick for Rudy Gay and Swfit?
