    There are lots of reasons:
    1) Deke has a 16ys' experience and he is more talented at the defensive end.
    2) Yao saves most of his energy for offense, he must get more than 20ppg to carry this team, while Deke's responsibility is defense only.
    3) Deke's elbow scares other guys, nobody can steal the ball from him. I remember JHO steals lots of rbs from Yao, I'm not mean to offend JHO, he is a great player.

    My opinion is:
Many of Deke's rebounds come from offensive boards. Yao doesn't get as many offensive boards.. why?? Because he is the main focus of our offense. How can he get these offensive rebounds when he's the one doing the scoring??

Why is Deke better rebounder than Yao?

    Reasons:-
    (1) Like many have said, yao gotta learn the elbows from Deke,
    (2) Like many have said, yao is always surrounded by 2 or more opponents thus making it hard for him to rebound, especially at the offensive ends,
    (3) Yao's size affect his jumpin ability and reactions,
    (4) Deke's 7'2 but i believe his arms are much longer than yao, anyone can confirm this?
    (5) Lastly, yao tends to let his teammates to grab some easy rebounds and I just dont understand why?? Try to be a good teammate???

Like i said in the other thread, the way Deke is rebounding the last 6-7 games, Deke better rebounder than any big men in the league, that includes D.Howard, Garnett, Duncan, Boozer etc etc.

one thing i realised about the difference between yao and deke's rebounding is that

deke got an amazing touch..all the balls that Yao has to tip to his team mates, Deke can probably control the ball enough with one hand and tip it to himself

he also seem to have better balance which helps a lot ie sometimes he tips it to himself over and over again

Yao is more often then not the focal point of the offense so he's one the taking shots half the time. Because of that he's basically always going to be outside of rebounding range. In fact I'd be willing to bet most of his boards are defensive, while a good portion of Mutombo's boards are offensive since his only goal on offense is to box out and pick up any missed shots. Their purposes on offense are different and because of that their position on the court is different as well.

Deke has a big hand. Yao has a small hand.
Deke does not take many shots, this allow him taking offensive rebounds from weak side.
Yao need to attemp lots of shots. He was blocked out when he takes shots.

Deke has played amazing, but is anyone else worried that he's gonna start to wear out? I mean he went from playing like 8-10 minutes a night and looking like a good backup to playing 30 and playing hard... like a guy in his prime. I just hope he can keep it up til Yao gets back. If he can keep getting 10+ rebounds a night and plays his signature solid D we'll be fine, but I hope Yao is watching and taking notes on how to throw them elbows.

And yes, it is amazing how sentiment towards JHo have changed. Up until like two months ago 75% of people HATED Juwan, but with a better team he's really settled into his role and is doing great. As such... everyone loves him now.

I hate to say this but I think Barkley said it best - some guys just have a nose for the ball. Himself, Rodman, Deke, guys like that just have an instinct for snagging those boards.

I think Rodman is alone in saying that he can actually predict the trajectory of missed shots and how they'll bounce off the rim, so he can get into position quicker and grab it... I'm skeptical, but looking at his performance over his career, who can argue with him :)

Deke has inaurguably the longest arms in the league.
Add that to his huge hands and long fingers, and his "automatic 15 day DL" patented elbows swing, and you got yourself a damn good rebounder. What brings it all together is his natural innate ability to know where the ball's bounce is going to take it before it gets there.

Yao = Short arms, smaller hands (also credited for all those easy slap or poke steals from midget guards, despite being stronger. Bright side? Great FT shooting.), no elbows or any danger of risking injury by comming anywhere near em, and sadly without a rebounding instinct.

Yao should be applauded just for averaging 10 per game.

Better him than the other team.

And in regards to the original topic, Deke is a better rebounder than Yao because his primary job is to patrol the paint. Yao's primary job is to score. Rebounding is secondary, and he has less energy to expend on it because he works hard on offense (double, triple teams). Plus I don't think Deke has ever been known for stamina issues. Yao is just a huge man and it takes a lot of energy to move that frame around. Deke in comparison is a bit shorter and he's very thin with insanely long arms.

I bet Yao, while resting and cheering for his team, is studying tapes of Deke! We may see a better rebounder in Yao when he comes back!

    the answer is simple.

Deke concentrated all his focus and energy on blocks and rebounds. His eyes are glued to the ball, and he is more experienced. plus, less defenders around him. he doesn't need to know where all the players are on the floor. beside JVG told the team not to pass the ball to deke for score. however, he is a great rebounder nonetheless.

Yao, often time don't go look for rebounds. as soon as one of his teammates jackup a ball, Yao starting to run to the oppositive way. Then, when it misses he failed to box out. His experience with the ball isn't as good as deke.
Yao also get distracted by the defenders around him. he tries to see the whole floor and be active and know where people are on both ends of the floor.

I do agreed that Yao should throw more elbows. hopefully Yao is watching how deke play and learn a thing or two from him. Cuz, no one know if deke will return next season.

Your answer to my question below would be my answer to your question:

Why can't deke copy some of Yao's technique?

    totall not true......
at this stage, yao is definitely more athletic.

the main problem with yao is that he has bad hands. He tend to lose his rebounds. in addition, yao has poor stamina. when one is tired, it is much harder to secure a rebound. a third reason is deke has better box-out positioning as that's the only thing he needs to focus on on the offensive end.

Exactly. Deke can also elevate some, Yao does not. When in traffic, too many times Yao gets both hands on the ball and it gets knocked away. When Deke gets both hands on the ball, the case is closed.

    1. mutombo was a rebounder and defensive specialist only in his career. he doesn't care to score and he won't have to. he can use that extra energy to box out and rebound.

    2. dikemebe has long arms, big hands and he's smaller than yao. all of this actually helps him to rebound better.

    3. dikembe takes away rebounds from his own team mates, where yao gives up rebounds to his team mates when they both could get them. deke just grabs the rebound no matter what.
